The Real "Monk's"

Someone asked earlier about the real restaurant in New York where they shoot the exterior as "Monk's"---well, here's probably more info then you really wanted...

According to my New York City guidebook, it's at 2880 Broadway, at 114th St. near Columbia. Take the #1 or 9 Subway to 116th St. Greasy burgers for $3-5, dinner under $6.50. (And the big salad...??) It's open Mon-Wed 6 a.m.- 1:30 a.m. and from Thurs 6 a.m.- Sun 1:30 a.m.

The guidebook also said that that Suzanne Vega song from last year ("Doo, doo, doo, doo...") was written about this diner. ???

BTW, it's called Tom's Restaurant and the phone number is 864-6137.

Tom's is at Broadway and 112th, not 114th. A friend of mine goes to school in NYC; he said it's really a 'greasy spoon' and nothing like what you'd expect from watching Seinfeld. However, as mediocre as the food might be, at least it's cheap.

Almost right...but your guidebook could stand a little fact-checking (unless the authors are sadists who want people to wander around corraling passersby, plaintively asking, "Where's Tom's? Where's Tom's?"). Tom's Restaurant is actually located at 112th Street, on the northeast corner of Broadway. Exit the subway at 110th Street, not 116th. And remember...only four out-of-towners at a time: 1) the booths really can't accomodate more than that, unless you're very skinny Columbia students; and 2) we regulars need the tables, and get awfully testy when tourists crowd us out (; o). Time it right, and you get REAL mashed potatos (some secrets I've sworn not to reveal!).

i, personally, have never heard of a coffee shop that takes reservations. on the other hand, i've seen some coffee shops which i would have serious reservations about eating at.
