Worst Seinfeld Episode

can you elaborate on which one was "The Seven"? I never know what the names are.

It's the one where George becomes unglued when a relative of Susan's names her baby Seven. George wanted to reserve that name for a future progeny as a tribute to Mickey Mantle. This whole subplot, I felt was out of character for George. The other subplots (Elaine/Kramer dispute over the Stingray and Jerry's date alway's wearing the same clothes were also unexceptional).

Oh, I agree so much. I love watching Seinfeld/Simpson hour each night on Fox, so nice. But I really hate it when they keep rerunning this stupid, pointless show over and over. Yes there are...that one where Jerry and Elaine decide to sleep together was on syndication last night--not one laugh in the whole show. The award for stupidist episode goes to the one with Kramer and the Midget (the one where Kramer convinces him to wear shoe lifts--excruciating!)

Yup, gotta 'gree with the worst episode the midget. Few episodes where Kramer is absent are truly funny. He's an important part of the group and his presence is always missed, even if he's only sliding into Jerry's place to say something bodacious.

I didn't find the midget story line funny, but I did think that another subplot within that episode (The Standin) led to a classic scene. In the subplot Jerry and George meet an acquaintance (Al Necci) on a bus. George wants to break up with his current girlfriend because they are not communicating at all but can't because Necci told the girlfriend that George is a heel and will hurt her. The closing scene in Monks where George has to appear gravely hurt when she announces the breakup is a classic.

Man, can't believe you've got that down as the worst. I love any episode with "parents" in it. Having grown up in NYC, I know those people. Also, Elaine high on drugs was memorable.

The Worst episode has GOT to be the one where they're stuck in the mall parking garage & can't find the car.

I don't know what you people are talking about! The worst Seinfeld episode is far better than most sitcoms' BEST episode! Just like the worst Beatles song is far better than most groups' best song.

But if we must choose one, please choose one that isn't a classic of TV humor. "The Pen," "The Parking Lot," and "The Chinese Restaurant" were all HILARIOUS!!! I remember seeing these episodes for the first time and realizing that this show was something special. Repeated viewings in syndication only confirm my original judgement.

I would nominate as the "worst" the episode entitled "The Deal," where Jerry and Elaine try to get back together sexually while staying friends. The funniest part of that show was George and Jerry in Monk's, with George saying, "What's the deal with Aquaman? Could he come on the land or was he just restricted to water?" and Jerry responding, "I think I saw him on land a couple of times." The rest of the episode was very weak.

Among contemporary episodes, I nominate "The Friar's Club," which had a number of promising set-ups but no payoffs. Very frustrating.

I agree. All the episodes are GREAT but some less great than others.

The only episode I can think of that stoops to the level of "normal" TV is The Seinfeld Chronicles. Good thing NBC was patient and didn't pull the plug based on that one. I guess the real-life Russel Dalrymple never joined Greenpeace :)

I've been reading everyone's opinions, and I just want to throw in my 2 cents
on the topic.
	My list of worsts...
 The pen - It really shows that an ensemble show just doesn't work well
             without the ensemble. Sure it had a few moments, but EVERY
	     Seinfeld episode has a few funny moments. None of them were
	     strong enough, IMHO, to save this episode. (It also shows that
	    too heavy a focus on Jerry's parents doesn't help.)

The Stand-in - Just unfunny through and through. It's kind of sad to be expected to laugh just because they give us a tough-guy midget.

	Basically, the first, second, and current season have a lot of sub-
standard episodes on my own personal scale. Early stuff like "The Revenge"
just wasn't interesting enough, and recent stuff like "The Seven" just goes
overboard.
	One last thing. To the people who criticized the Chinese Restaurant,
and The Deal....
	I can understand why someone who is a) a Kramer disciple, and b) a
short attention-spanned person, would get bored fast with the Chinese
Restaurant. However, I thought it was really amazing how well they worked
with that limited space, and the limited plot idea of "waiting for a table",
and turned out some really funny dialogue and interaction that helped define
the kind of show this would be. (that was only the ninth episode)
	And about the deal...
	I can also understand why people don't like this one. There's a lack
of real witty moments, and there's that odd, unnatural moment of seriousness
at the end when Jerry and Elaine discuss their friendship. Normally, I enjoy
the fact that Seinfeld, never, even for a minute, takes itself seriously, while
spinoff shows such as "Friends" never hesitate to give us some kind of
serious "moral to the story" which I just can't stand.
	However, I think I can appreciate this one moment. It show's that
we're dealing with real people, not puppet characters.
	And also, the scene with the bench was absolutely hysterical. It saved
the show from being poor. When Kramer looked at Jerry and said "Yates." I knew
I was watching a good episode.

For my part, I really enjoyed The Chinese Restaurant.. especially with George's description of what happened with his girlfriend (the buffer zone again.. and the batman stuff, also the We're Living in a society!!)

anyway you all remember the chinese guy who made Jerry, Elaine and george wait right? is he the same guy who was in the X-Files ad for the next upcoming episode.. (And Seinfeld and X-Files fan??) hope I didnt offended too many ppl for this rather off topic question..

Having just waded through 15 msgs on this topic, I just gotta reply to the folks who don't like "The Deal".

That entire scene when Elaine surfs to the naked station, Jerry wants her to change the channel, then he gives her a look that she notices, and they start trying to rationalize their way into resuming the sexual aspect of their relationship w/out destroying the friendship by making up rules -- folks, that is rare stuff. That is comedy at its highest level. That is sublime.

"The Deal" is one of the first episodes I saved on tape, and I've watched it maybe 10 times in five years, and all because of the delicious erotic tension between the two of them in that scene. I could cite other brilliant bits, (e.g. J and G in Monk's, J says, "I slept w/Elaine last night," then refuses to provide details, saying he's not in the mood, and G's classic rant about how he has no job, no prospects and J better "get in the mood!"), but watching J and E try to negotiate what no one in human history has ever achieved is for me one of the greatest bits this wonderful show has ever produced. Which probably reveals more about me than I intended, but such is the nature of comedy.

BTW, & I've said this before, it's Yeats, not Yates. & not Keats. Just another recovering English major who wants to write...

So DID I. My memory of this one had it as being pretty dull, with the group wandering around FOREVER; However your summary of it had me rolling. When you put it all together in rapid succession the way you did, it actually seems like a pretty funny episode.

The worst episode was last Thursday's (5/2/96). It really never went anywhere and didn't tie up any loose ends.

how could you say that the "parking garage" episode was boring..... that happened to be a very funny and insightful episode, where it really related many of its situations to those that happen in real life ....just a thought

A minor correction that might in fact be wrong: I don't thing George had time to actually begin peeing before he was caught. So in typical George-luck fashion, he got caught and ticketed without having done anything wrong. Though obviously he was about to.

By the way, I like this episode. It's one of the ones that actually _are_ about "nothing".

How can you hate that one? It was funny as all hell. To tell you the truth, I don't think there is a "worst" Seinfeld episode. They are all funny as hell, and even if it isn't funny as all hell, it is hularious.

What both of you are forgetting is that neither George or Kramer are in this episode. That alone makes it one of the worst episodes ever even though it was kind of funny. George RULES!

What is the worst Seinfeld episode that you have ever seen? I think my worst one is the one in which Jerry & Elaine sleep together and decide to be a couple, while having certain rules.

It wasn't funny, and I think that it was the worst Seinfeld episode ever!!!

well i think this is a rather silly comment to make, but, you are entitled to your own opinion... (some facts to back up my point.. a good way, by the way, to present any argument):

-the whole scene designating the rules: HYSTERICAL (this was included in the 100th episode) -jerry's difficulty bying gift -jerry getting her cash ($182)... kramer's wooden bench & poem by yeats... GENIUS! -george spending 1/2 as much as jerry... 91 dollars in cash!!! HA HA HA

I agree with the first guy, that scene about the rules is slow and a bit too "over-Seinfeldish." They try to hard to be Seinfeldesque in that one. Jason

The Chinese Restaurant ?!! You've got to be kidding. That is an all time classic. The whole episode is right in that one set plus there's no Kramer. How can you forget George proclaiming,"We live in a society. We're supposed to act in a civilized way." Or when Elaine asks George to bribe the Maitre'D and George replies,"I'm very bad at these things. I once tried to bribe an usher at the roller derby. I almost got arrested." Or when Jerry meets his friend Lorraine (from his uncle's office), doesn't remember her name and tries to wing it. That is in my top ten episode list.

In my opinion the worst episode by far was last season's finale with Bette Midler and Jerry's Tonya-Harding-wannabe girlfriend. The episode aired in 95--three years after the 92 Games. A dated and unfunny joke.

The Games with Tanya Harding were in 1994, but the joke was still somewhat dated.

It's interesting that the shows that are most often cited as the worst (Chinese Rest., Parking Garage, Parking Space, Jerry & Elaine visit Jerry's parents) are the ones that are the best examples of the basic concept of the program - that it's a show about nothing!

Yes. Yes you did. Shocking, isn't it? Considering it's generally regarded as one of the best, and the epitome of a Seinfeld episode -- everybody has stuff to do, there are funny situations all over, one unifying theme, a situation common to our fellow man, and... uromycitosis. Every episode should have a reference to uromycitosis. I can only assume that some people have never been to a mall parking garage and therefore could not relate. While most people would agree with the first two, many people do not like, or don't put the last two in their top ten, while others think they are great. I guess that is typical of this (or any other) group. We have various tastes and don't always agree on any particular episode, but we all (or most of us) agree that we like the show.

I think it's OK. Definitely has some funny moments. Perhaps what makes some people have an aversion to it is the 'helplessness factor.' I have to admit that at some points, I'm almost squirming in my seat at the sheer idiocy of how they all kept getting split up and lost. Elaine standing there crying out 'Kraaaaa-mmmmerrrr!' in the middle of the garage, totally alone. But there was this hint of drama, tension, that made it rather amusing.

That's the point, that it's boring. It doesn't work too well there as opposed to the hilarious Chinese Restaurant episode where you just wonder what the REASONING of the host is.

I thought that the worst episode was the chinese restaurant episode. Nobody in real life would take being treated like that. Especially not New Yorkers.

you're right, and i'm one of (probably the only) person that thinks the parking garage is the best show i've seen so far. really. as well as the chinese resturant. and if you take note, those two are from the early seasons.

The Parking Garage is a stale episode. At the is stage of the show, the writing was becoming tight and the pace was getting really snappy - 2 things that make Seinfeld so good. This one got bogged down in a one gag plot, and it shows. The very best episodes have 3 or 4 threads of plots running through the script and they are a delight.
