The Serenity Now

My thoughts on "The Serenity Now": Jerry's sudden plunge into emotionalism and Kramer's feud with the neighborhood kids were both wildly surreal, the "serenity now" thing was overdone, and it's pretty farfetched that George's father would suddenly start a computer business for no reason.

That said, I loved it! Jerry getting sentimental was the perfect twist on the characters' increasing level of detachedness, the proposal to Elaine was great stuff, and the finale was more understated than recent episodes, like that forced oil ball fiasco.

I think the neighborhood kids thing got played out, and I would have preferred it if it had ended right after the baseball, as a throwaway gag. I did like the porch idea, though.

Contrary to what people have said, I thought the subplots were tied together very well, and I think people are overestimating the episodes of the past. Many classic episodes left some plotlines untied. In this one, it was done very smoothly: Kramer gets his screen door from George's father, which initiates the porch, which provokes the feud with the kids, which causes Kramer to snap after using the "serenity now" (learned from Frank) and break the computers (which are in his apartement because the sentimental Jerry scared George away). Elaine, frustrated with the Shiksa nonsense, reconsiders Jerry's proposal, but George, in distress over the computers, has "scared Jerry straight," so Jerry changes his mind. It doesn't tie together all at once, but I like it better this way anyway. IMO, when they force them together at the end (as in "The Pothole,") it's never as good.

If Lloyd Braun has nothing better to do than work for Frank, his life has clearly never recovered from that breakdown! To make matters worse, we learn he really is nuts! "He just liked ringing that bell!" Ha ha.

"Serenity now . . . insanity later." The most memorable quote of the episode. Go Lloyd!

I thought that was it was hysterical, mostly because I took it to be a slam on those members of the viewing public that have been waiting for a Jerry and Elaine moment a la Moonlighting. As in: give it up, you guys are idiots, it's not going to happen.
