what was the Titanic reference in tonight's episode? i must have missed it, or it just went over my head.

George skipped out of a business meeting early, after delivering a one-liner that entertained everyone, and took the afternoon off to see it.

It was very peculiar. They even mentioned a specific detail in the episode. Mr Ross mentioned that a helicopter landed on a car. Now, if the real movie "Firestorm" had a scene where a helicopter landed on a car, I would think it was more than coincidence.

Has anybody seen Firestorm? [email] (Hammer nail here--> <-- for a new monitor.) (Remove XXXX to reply)

not really since a movie came out in 1995 that was also called "Firestorm"

Mike Coluccizaphy

No, it came out earlier this year. Wasn't it starring Howie Long? Yeah... I'm pretty sure it came out early February.

Believe it or not there are multiple movies of the same name in existance. There was a Firestorm in 1995 as well as 1998.......

The only thing that stays the same is everything changes........

What about 'Rochelle Rochelle' a young girls erotic journey from Milan to Minsk. Lou.

Its kinda funny since, the Titanic reference was the second year in a row that Seinfeld "predicted" the Best Picture winner a few days before the Oscar telecast. Last year was "The English Patient", they devoted an entire episode to it and a week or so later it won Best Picture and 8 other awards. This year, they made a crack at the blockbuster "Titanic" and a few days later Titanic won Best Picture and 10 other awards, too bad they won't be able to predict the Best Pic winner for 3 years in a row....

I can't remember any other movies that were referenced... the closest thing to it that I remember is the Melrose Place episode, although that was a TV show. However, it doesn't surprise me that they mentioned Titanic. Seems like everyone is, on TV, radio, everywhere. It's a major part of pop culture, and looks like it will be, for the next year or so at least.

In a related thought, I think it would be interesting if some of the Seinfeld characters were to be seen watching movies that they themselves have starred in.... such as Kramer renting UHF, or George watching Love! Valor! Compassion! It'd kind of shake things up a bit.

Regarding real life movies...Remember George's fascination with Marissa Tome.....My Cousin Vinny he gets busted watching that by Susan.

The Titanic reference was that George saw it when he left early in the Kruger meeting. They also got into small talk about how they thought that Old Rose was a tramp and a liar (hey, I didn't believe that story she told for a moment, even though I really liked the movie)

As one of only two or three people on earth who hasn't seen Titanic, would someone please explain who is the old lady and why is she a liar and a tramp?

The old lady was the person telling the story of what happened to her on the Titanic, how she was trapped by her mother, her cruel fiance, and her rich peers and how she fell in love with a poor artist and how the Titanic sank. I thought that lady was lying too, but I thought it was a good movie.

It was a good movie soured by a Walt Disney cartoonish love story. If you ask me it was just a 3 hour, billion dollar pantomime.

I enclose the following (not written by me....don't know who did so I can't credit him)......it sums up everything that is wrong with the whole sorry movie so if you haven't seen it yet (is that possible?), maybe you shouldn't read on.

^^ TITANIC THE ALTERNATIVE SCRIPT

(Scene 1)

ROSE: Why, this is a fancy boat, isn't it?

CAL: Yes it certainly is. Here is the art you asked for. It is by an artist named Picasso. I am certain he will amount to nothing.

ROSE: Ha ha ha. That is very funny to our 90's audience, because they know these priceless paintings will sink with the boat.

JACK: Hello, I'm played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Perhaps you have seen the many girls who worship me. You are very pretty.

ROSE: Thank you. So are you.

JACK: I know. Prettier than you, in fact. I am going to put on my "brooding" face now, to ensure that women will keep coming back again and again to see this movie. Later, my white shirt will be soaking wet.

ROSE: While you're doing that, I will concentrate on standing here and looking pretty, to keep the men in the audience interested until the boat sinks and people start dying. I'll try to stay attractive by getting my dress wet. Meanwhile, for no apparent reason, I'll count the lifeboats.

CAL: Excuse me. I do not like you, even though you saved my fiancee's life. I am going to sneer at you and treat you like dirt because you're poor, and then I'll probably be physically abusive to my fiancee, and then, just to make sure the audience really hates me, and to make sure my character is entirely one-dimensional, perhaps I'll throw an elderly person into the water.

AUDIENCE: Boo! We hate you! Even though all real people have at least a few admirable qualities, we have not been shown any of yours, and plus, you're trying to come between Leonardo and Kate, and so therefore we hate you! Boo!

(Scene 2)

JACK: I'm glad we snuck away like this so that you could cheat on your fiance.

ROSE: So am I. Even though I am engaged to him and have made a commitment to marry him, that is no reason why you and I cannot climb into the backseat of a car and steam up the windows together. The fact that I am the heroine of the movie will no doubt help the audience forgive me of this, though they would probably be VERY angry indeed if my fiance were to do the same thing to me.

JACK: I agree. First, I would like to draw you.

ROSE: Can I take my clothes off now?

JAMES CAMERON: Yes.

ROSE: But can a movie with five minutes of continuous nudity be at all successful in say, Provo, Utah, where the audiences might not stand for that sort of thing?

JAMES CAMERON: I would be willing to bet that for the first three weeks the film is in release, every single showing at Wynnsong Theater in Provo will sell out.

NARRATOR: According to Wynnsong manager Matt Palmer, that is exactly what happened.

ROSE: All right, then. (sound of clothes hitting the floor)

(Scene 3)

FIRST MATE: Captain, we're about to hit an iceberg.

CAPTAIN: Great, I could use some ice for my drink. (sound of drinking)

ICEBERG: (hits boat)

FIRST MATE: That can't be good.

CAPTAIN: Bottoms up!

AUDIENCE: (silence)

FIRST MATE: That was irony, you fools.

AUDIENCE: Boo! Where's Leonardo?

JACK: I have been informed that this boat is sinking

ROSE: That is terrible

JACK: Would you like to engage in some more immoral-but-justified behavior?

ROSE: Certainly. Let's steam up some windows.

CAL: (aside) I'm getting the raw end of the deal here. To cement my morally-dubious-yet-somehow-less-annoying-than-you personality, I am going to handcuff Jack to this pipe, here in a room that will soon be filling with water, due to the fact that we are sinking, which I believe has been mentioned previously.

JACK: Why don't you just shoot me?

CAL: Because then you wouldn't be able to escape and save Rose from me. Of course, you're going to die anyway...

AUDIENCE: Don't spoil it for us!

JACK: He's right, though. I am doomed.

AUDIENCE: Aww, look how cute he is when he's doomed.

CAL: I hate you people. (scene 4)

JACK: We're not going to die. At least you're not.

ROSE: This water is very cold.

JACK: *glugglugglug*

ROSE: He's gone. I'll just freeze my lips to this whistle.

(Scene 5)

150 YEAR OLD ROSE: And that's when Jack rescued me from my evil fiance and helped me float on a board in the water. Of course, if it hadn't been for having to rescue HIM, I could have gotten on an actual lifeboat, and not frozen my legs off. Anyway, he's pretty much dead now, and I'm well over a thousand years old, and who's making my supper? I need a bath. Turn down that Enya music, it's making my ears hurt. You kids today, with your loud music. Why, when I was - hey! Don't you walk away from me, Mr. Snooty-Patootie! I'd turn you over my kneee, if I had one. I'll beat you in the head with this huge diamond! Come back here!

(Fade to black. Roll credits, accompanied by that annoying Celine Dion song and the sound of James Cameron counting a huge pile of cash.) -----------------------------------------------

Should read: It was a spectacular movie heightened with a powerful and engaging love story.

Are you Siskel or Ebert?

Jonathan

If you're going to make comparisons, then get them right. While Ebert has been very enthusiastic about the film, Siskel seems to have an obvious grudge for it, although he doesn't hate it.

And yes I was serious.

MFLuder848 wrote:

I was just being sarcastic because Siskel & Ebert seem to give everything two thumbs up. Every time I see some piece of crap new film or video advertised it seems to have their moronic "Two Thumbs Up" seal of approval.

If you want to go on believing that it was a "powerful and engaging love story" then go ahead. Have you ever been to a pantomime? I think you'd love it....you're actually encouraged to boo and hiss and they always have powerful engaging stories with multi-dimensional characters.

Climbing back into my pod now.......cya :)

Jonathan

Thanks for the alternative script. It explained who the old lady was, and I'm sure it was more entertaining than the actual movie.

Geez, sounds like the person who wrote that hadn't got laid in a while.

Did Lovett every outright ask Rose if she knew where the diamond was? The answer is no, and therefore she didn't lie. I can't believe you didn't understand the character's motivations. And she was *not* a tramp. Her fiance was a cold and ruthless person, while she found pure love with Jack.

Titanic is the best film to come in decades....and suffice to say it's Best Picture worthy.

As apparently the only other person who has not seen the floating crapmonster known as Titanic I say congratulooser.

Titanic, how she was trapped by her mother, her cruel fiance, and her rich peers and how she fell in love with a poor artist and how the Titanic sank. I thought that lady was lying too, but I thought it was a good movie.>>

Please tell me you're kidding! Rose was *not* lying. It just goes to show how unintelligent George is.

--Scott

Well, I did think that the old lady was lying, until she threw that thing off the ship and they showed all the pictures of her at the end.

Please tell me your kidding and that you don't actually believe that the love story in Titanic is TRUE!

Titanic, how she was trapped by her mother, her cruel fiance, and her rich peers and how she fell in love with a poor artist and how the Titanic sank. I thought that lady was lying too, but I thought it was a good movie.>>

She could've gotten the necklace from anywhere and made up a story that fitted around it. There was no proof that any of her story was actually 100% true.

The story of the "Titanic" is a fact, but the love story is a fiction. In the movie, the old lady is suppose to be a survivor of the ship.

Jerry asked George what he did the rest of the day after he left the office on a "high note". George said he went and saw "Titanic".

re: other movie references - Breakfast at Tiffany's episode was a classic - when George forced his way into that family's apartment because he was too lazy to read the book. (wasn't that it?)

In the same episode, wasn't he also cuaght watching yet another Marisa Tomei video? I believe it was "Only You".
