Birth Control Inconsistencies

In "The Sponge" Elaine states how she refuses to use anything but the Today sponge. Yet, in "The Virgin" Elaine makes a reference to her diaphragm. Very peculiar indeed.

See. Here we have an inconsistency which can be refuted and backed up at the same time. It's completely possible that Elaine switched from a diaphragm to a sponge in the three years between when those episodes aired. On the other hand, Elaine said in "The Sponge" that women stick with their chosen birth control method, which is why she didn't want to give up using a sponge. But why would she switch from a diaphragm to a sponge, using that logic? :)

Maybe because she decided that the sponge was more convenient than the diaphragm, and the sponge is (was) relatively new. She was loyal to the diaphragm method until someone came up with something she liked better, and now she is loyal to the sponge (assuming she has any left...)

It makes total sense that she would switch to the sponge because it is similar to a diaphragm in that one can use both well in advance of any sexual encounter. Both methods are compatible with spontaneity, and both do not depend on the man providing birth control (condom). Both are "full-contact" methods as well.

If that's the case, why didn't she just switch back to the diaphragm when the sponge was discontinued?

It seems obvious to me! She switched from the diaphragm to the sponge in the first place, because the sponge was better! She doesn't want to go back to something that's subpar!

Maybe not...the Today sponge is no longer on the shelves (as far as I know), so I guess Elaine sparingly uses the ones she has stockpiled. Those guys she doesn't want to use the sponge with get the diaphragm. My sister says that Elaine has mentioned "sponge-worthiness" a few times.

Hey, to some young posters uninitiated in the ways of the world, this is a topic of importance. I recall, a few months ago, a post where someone asked how the sponge and diaphragm worked.

They shouldn't be learning this stuff on the Net.
