I believe it was impregnated (pun intended ) with a spermicide, and was inserted so as to provide both a chemical and physical barrier to the sperm.

Speaking of which, my mom teaches sex education to junios high students. She was teaching contraception the day after the sponge episode was rerun. What a fantastic teaching aid Seinfeld is! All the students were already familiar with it.

you might as well call it the yesterday sponge. its off the market. the episode was all about the fact that they stopped production of the Today sponge (there was only one factory used to make them all) w/o there being much media hype about it at all... there was a fault in the water purity system in the plant and the company who owned Today said, "hey, only like 19% of all women use this thing. we can just stop making it. its not worth the millions it brings in b/c we are a company earning billions" and wham-o no sponge.
people shoudl not stillbe teaching about it in health ed classes b/c there has not been one produced since 1994.
irony: i was writing a paper on the very topic in the school computer labs and thus missed the "sponge worthy episode" (luckily my best freind taped the last 50%).
No, but yesterday on Court TV I saw that some guy was being charged with sexual harrassment and his defense was that he was quoting a line he heard on "Seinfeld". When in doubt, always blame the media!

Basically, he got busted for bringing up the rhymes-with-Delores word with a female coworker. His attorney claims he never spoke the word, but pointed to it in the dictionary. He was fired b/c years earlier he was involved in a sexual harassment suit (with much more serious accusations) which was settled out of court. But he was on thin ice with the management, and he knew it.
