End of Season ( and Susan!!)

Well, folks, last night was it!!   On the verge of George's and Susan's
wedding the season ended!! Jerry found a girl who was <exactly> like him
and who he,at first, adored but then realized that he hated, hence he
hated being around himself ( no surprize her, look what happend when
Diane was engaged to Frazier on "Cheers", she aborted the wedding, I
think for the same reason- opposites attract!)
   Also, George was <really> dreading geting married to Susan  ! The one
time ,she compromised with him ( buying the cheapest wedding invitaions
with the toxic glue) proved to be her last ( and fatal) one!  Lessons to
be learned? One, don't marry unless both of you <really> want to spend
the rest of your lives with each other!! And, two, for more than one
letter, saturate a sponge and use it in lieu of licking the envelope
glue!!
     Did anyone notice that it was all George could do to keep from
jumping up and down and cheering when the ER doctor told him Susan had
passed away? As disasterous the marriage would have been for the two of
them and as unlikable as she was , his reaction still showed what a
totally self-centered,self- indulgent and uncaring person George is! I'll
bet when the show returns, he'll be cheering at her funeral in front of
all her realtives! I can't blame Elaine for wanting to quit hanging
around the group if the group always contains George! One possible
benefit of the George& Susan marriage would have been that two helpess
<nice> people would have been spared making the mistake of  getting
hitched to these two dreks!

Not that anyone asked, but I thought I might weigh in with one opinion about the season finale.

At times I suppose I get caught into thinking that it'd be nice if the characters on the TV show called "Seinfeld" would be a little nicer, deeper, more feeling...kinda like what I require from my neighbors. But, you know what? They aren't real people and they owe me nothing. Lanie, who everyone knows I love more than life itself, is been superficial and stubborn. George is overly dramatic and neurotic. Jerry is thoughtless and superficial. Kramer is a loon. (Please note: I've left off lots of other characterisitcs of the characters that appear every now and again. Plus I'm all loaded up on Pepsi and cigars right now.)

But the point is. They acted mean and thoughtless over Susan's death because that's the way they are! I love them as is, because they don't live in my building or populate my world. They live in that little freaking box in my living room. I don't require any more from them than to live their little TV lives in front of me for a 1/2 hour a week (not counting syndie shows...which I almost have finally taped completely).

The fine actor who played the character of Susan is out of work on the show now (which is sad because I've had the good chance to exchange e-mail with her sister over the past months), but Susan, the character, deserved to die! Ha ha ha ha ha ha he he he he he ho ho ho ho ho ho. (Sorry, Pepsi is coming out my nose.)

Anyway. The point from here is: Sure, lots of times the characters on the show don't act like we want them to...but that's because we allow ourselves to think of them as something they aren't.

Good tidings, everyone. With season end out of the way we can get back and concentrate on taping the syndies. (Can you believe that I have 85 complete episodes, but have no complete version of the CONTEST? (Wife taped over one...I taped over another...I set the VCR wrong one night.) Oh well, the thrill is in the journey, folks.

George's Mom and Dad act like my Italian/Catholic Grandmother and Grandfather(s). Why is this so hard to accept?

They are east coast types.

We know that Georges dad is Italian - based upon the percentages, there is a 98% chance that George is Roman Catholic.

How about his mother? I would guess that she is NOT in a mixed marriage. Remember when George was going to change religions to impress a girl? George's mothers reaction is EXACTLY the reaction my mother had when ever I dated a girl that was not Catholic. Since she was so against George changing religions, I would have to guess that SHE is not in a mixed marrage - thus she would also be Catholic.

If you have ever been to New York, New York, it seems like everyone fits this so called stereo typical "jew". But that is just plain racist.

You all sound like my father-in-law who things Sienfeld is nothing but Jewish humor - I guess he has never been with my grandparents out to dinner (BEFORE 4PM!!!)

Why is this such an issue indeed.

    I can't understand the infatuation wiht what religion a character
    is.

Is Kramer's little actor friend Jewish? Who really cares.

    Is he FUNNY when he beats Kramer for talking him into wearing lifts
    in his shoes? or messing up his scene when Krammer can't sit down
    in those shrunk jeans?     That's the issues I can relate to.

    Even though I don't see the relevance. I think since so many do
    seem to care, they should do an episode about it. It could be
    funny. Have George's Parents mistaken for whatever religion they're
    not and they blow up.

    As far as Christian's father-in-law thinking Seinfeld is nothing
    more than Jewish humor... So be it. The more ethnic the better!
    George gets a piece of glass in his eye at Jerry's wedding when
    Jerry stumps the glass during the ceremony... Does George SUE his
    best friend?

    How sad it would be if I only saw people who looked like me or
    talked like me, etc.

Our ethnic diversity is what makes our country so Great.

Say what you will, it doesn't matter what the "clues" are, Jason plays George with a Jewish *NOT* "Typically New York" sensibility. The Jewishness is an endearing quality of the show, as in "The Nanny".

Those who think that East Coast types and New Yorkers talk and act like this are at least mostly wrong.

Originally when I debated this question with my friends I was confused. I more or less dismissed it. Now that I read this discussion thread my curiousity was reborn.

I have gone to the video tapes and this is what I've come up with.

I think that Frank Costanza is Italian. I think that Estelle Costanza is Jewish.

There are definitely instances where each character adheres to the traditional Italian and Jewish stereotypes.

Here are my reasons:

Frank went to Italy to visit a long lost cousin of his. Nuf said.

In the episode where George ruins Frank's car by parking in the handicapped space, while explaining it (with both parents present), George mutters that the car chasing him had swatstikas on it. Why would George say this if it meant nothing, he could have just said the chasers had purple hair or something.

That's my take on the situation.

I agree. Plus, Catholics are not liked my Nazi's (just look at the video The Blues Brother's - The Neo-Nazi's want Jake and Elwood dead and as a bonus, the Nazi guy states "and there Catholic!") So any real Catholic knows that they are also the targets of hate groups (Nazi's, Rasta's, KKK's ...)

We have and office debate on the Jewish/Catholic/Italian/George issue. Do you have any supporting evidence either way ? Are there specific episodes that relate to this question ?

In one episode this past year, Elaine related that when she went to Tuscany with the Maestro she saw someone who looked just like Frank Costanza. Frank C. said that he had a cousin there who he hasn't seen since he was a child. In The Calzone, George tells the store proprietor - "Costanza, that's Italian!".

No specific information has been given about George's original religion other than that we can rule out Latvian Orthodox. Whatever George's religion originally was, we know that his attitude toward that subject is irreverant. He cooked an omelette with a surprise ingredient (Lobster), which he allowed Jerry's devoutly Jewish girlfriend to eat without informing her about it and one time he also made a sign of the cross as a mocking gesture.

I went back to the video tape due to the responses about the Nazi's and I found something that I hadn't before.

In the episode in question (The Handicap Spot), not only does George complain of the swatstickas but also that the assailants were hurling RACIAL EPITAPHS. Which race do you suppose they were referring to? C'mon!!!
