The piece is more frequently known as "Adagio for Strings", and it's by Samuel Barber, an American composer. The piece is an arrangement (for string orchestra) of part of a movement of a Barber string quartet. There are loads of recordings of the piece -- the most frequently recommended one is conducted by Leonard Bernstein on the Deutsche Grammophone label. And yes, it was the music used in PLATOON.
