Musings on Seinfeld (the sitcom)

I have to agree with those who think that Seinfeld has lost its appeal, or so we think.

Its easy to criticize the show now becasue we have about four years worth of reference points to compare with and lets face it - it gets harder and harder to come up with "new" ideas for episodes. I have all of the first year's shows and the pilot on tape. I have most of the second and third years and then recording becomes very spotty. I'll bet in five years I'll wish I had recorded them all!

I believe that Jerry Seinfeld will fold the show in order to go out on a high note much akin to Bob Newhart (recall "The Bob Newhart Show? THAT was a great show. "Newhart" started out as a great show and then Stephanie and Michael showed up ... that was the end of that. Then there was/is "Bob".). Looks like Jerry Seinfeld learned from Newhart's mistakes.

Bottom line - the next time you feel like complaining about Seinfeld, think about the dreck that's on TV and ou'll change your mind, quickly.

Agreed that it is one of the best shows on television. I think it's because of this that the weaker episodes (see "The Handicapped Spot" or much of this season) are so frustratinng. Once you've gotten a glimpse of what they can do, you feel ripped off when the resort to standard sitcom practices (oh, gotta wrap this plotline up, it's almost been a half and hour, quick, come up with something like George grabbing a hot iron). I religiously taped the first few seasons, but at this point, I can't see myself going back to watch the "Puffy Shirt", or The Cigar Store Indian" again.

'scuse me, that's what the writers get paid major money for. I'm sure there's no shortage of people capable writing a Seinfeld episode, and for cheap!!

All the "crap" on TV is written intentionally for an audience with a low enough mentality to enjoy it. How else can you explain why shows like "Full House" continue to get large ratings every year?

The latter may be the worst show in TV history. However, I sometimes tape the Funniest Videos show and play it back zapping every ounce of Saget's inane commentary, and just watch the videos, some of which are pretty funny (and almost all are spontaneous/candid as opposed to the idiotic staged crap on "Funniest People").
