Did anyone notice or know why at the beginning of "The Maid" episode why Jerry and Elaine were constantly chewing gum, making it hard to hear what they said?? Does anyone have an explanation for this??

I noticed Jerry had a touch of laryngitis in the early part of the episode. Chewing gum probably helped him if he had a coexisting sore throat, and they wrote his need for gum into the show--just my opinion. alt showbiz gossip
Well, (chomp), the cojeewihgijae goijeg and weihgee (chomp chomp chomp) asdfkjekl, so there you have it.
What I didn't get about their chewing gum is that Jerry doesn't like gum ("The Gum"). Why was he chewing it in "The Maid," then?
