'The Puffy Shirt' is one of my favourite episodes. In the scene where George is moving back in with his parents, his mother offers them a plate of baloney sandwiches.

As a limey, I'm fascinated to know what 'baloney' is! We don't have it over here. I've checked on the internet but all mention of these sandwiches assumes you know what baloney is in the first place.

I've worked out that it's some sort of beef. I originally thought it was an Irish food, but it seems that it is derived from 'bologna' (whatever that is) which sounds Italian.

So calling all Americans - what kind of meat is it, how is it cooked, is it Irish or Italian, why is it more of a childhood meal etc.

PS It sounds very nice!

Yeah, presented as a coldcut with about a 3" diameter, as someone else noted. It may have Italian roots and the Italian coldcut it most resembles is mortadella (which I believe is Italian for "dead 'Touched by an Angel' co-star"). Here's a link for "bologna mortadella":

It really is gross: bland with a hotdog-like texture. The word "baloney is also, of course, a g-rated substitute for "bullsh*t".

My mom always called it: "steak de pauvres" (french for : poor people's steak...) It's not steak but it's still meat :)

It tastes nasty...that's all you need to know...

Stick to Salami...That's the good stuff...

Or Capicola...I wouldn't be Italian if I didn't live off that...hehe...

John TwernboldJoemovie

Since you're Italian, do you pronounce capicola Sopranos-style: "Gobba-goo"? :-)

Gabbagul! And I would get a smack from my boot-rooted family if I said it that way!

There's an "l" at the end though.

And manicotti becomes "man-a-goot" :-)

Yes...But it's "Gabbagol"...The great thing is living in Brooklyn, I can go into a deli and order it as gabbagol and they know what I'm talking about...I remember the first time I went to get some and I looked up at the cold cuts they had and it said "Capicola" but I couldn't find gabbagol and I didn't know they were the same thing...My aunt told me later on...I felt sorta stupid...

Oh, and another lesson from this half-Italian (full at heart)...It's GALAMA, not CALAMARI...I don't care what the menu says!...

Yabut...you didn't have an entire generation before you who would smack you for slaughtering their mother tongue like *I* did. I am also from the Planet Brooklyn :) but was kidnapped to the west coast by those same eye-talians.

It's meat and meat by-products (offal) ground to a paste, seasoned, and put in a casing about 3" in diameter. I don't know if there are any beef vs. pork ratios specified. My dad used to make it for a major meat packer, he had the recipe book, badly stained, in his pocket. I recall ingredient lists, not necessarily for bologna, such as "50 pounds tripe". My mother would make a fresh copy of the book for him every few months. He would never eat *any* such product. I am quite sure there is a huge amount of fat in it.

I tried to find the nutritional info on Oscar Meyer's site, but came up empty handed.

Here are a couple of amusing 'Merican links, though:

this is no B A L O N E Y

Regular old baloney that you get in the store contains

anything off the animals' bodies that would look gross

if put out seperately. That's why they compress it all

together and put out this thing "baloney." One day some

knuckle-head said "Hey...instead of throwing out this

disgusting stuff...How about we package and sell it?!"

In baloney(as well as hot dogs)there have been traces

found of feet, ears, noses, eyelids, testicles, etc.

It's sickening. Basically, baloney is a product used by

companies to extract even more cash from the public by

selling waste products.

I think "fat" is the least of your problems here... at least it is "all" beef.... I saw some hot-dogs at the store the other day that said:

INGREDIENTS: Beef and/or pork and/or chicken and/or mutton(!) and/or their by-products.

Yum!

Like my dad used to say: You're eating lips and arseholes!

Enjoy,

Er ... I think I'll pass! Thanks to all who replied to my query. Baloney sounds horrible and I can now understand the reaction of George and Jerry to George's mother's offer of sandwiches!

The best bologna sandwhiches are found at any NASCAR track in the south. Fried bologna, smothered in fried onions and peppers on fresh Wonderbread with a little mustard.....I can feel my arteries clogging up now. Mmmmmmmmmmmm bologna.............
