What are you, Mannix?

Has anyone made a list of the number of times that a character says (in response to some action of the other person), "What are you, [blank]?" or "Who are you, [blank]?". I know that in "The Limo", George suggests that they escape the neo-nazis by jumping out of the moving limo, to which Jerry responds "What are you, Mannix?" In "The Deal", Jerry gives Elaine a wrapped present, in which is a wad of money. Elaine angrily responds "Who are you, my uncle?" There was another time Jerry says to someone "Who are you, Lex Luther?"

Any others? There's got to be a bunch more.

"What are you, the boyfriend? Here for a...quickie?" (The Doorman to Jerry in "The Doorman")

"What is he, a vampire?" (Jerry to Kramer about Jon Voight in "The Mom and Pop Store")

"What are you, a medieval dungeon master?" (Jerry to Keri in "The Reverse Peephole")

"What is this, an Abbott and Costello routine?" (Jerry to George in "The Tape")

A lot of people say it.

I would lose that.

Ah ha! What's that?

"Lose that"? That's not a Hollywood expression!

Yes it is!

p.s. "Cool guy? What are you, in 8th grade?" (Jerry to George, about Tony the Mimbo, in "The Stall")

This may not qualify, but...

"Find out if she likes you? What are you, in high school?"

It's a good one.... Jerry's like after that too: "If you and Potsy are done scheming..."

That's a good idea - We don't have one for Seinfeld but it is close to the expressions listed in Star Trek. McCoy said it a few times in the original series and then the writers humourously wove it into future scripts for the doctors.

I will compile what people write here and see if there are any more.

OK, I'll jump in here:

I'm a Photographer, not a doctor (Dan Coogan in his real life)

I do like the idea of the "What are you - Who are you list" -- it's very funny.

There were two in "The Susie" from last night:

Jerry and Elaine were discussing "Sharon" and Elaine has two responses to Jerry (I apologize for forgetting Jerry's questions).

"What am I...a bulemic, chain-smoking stenographer from New Jersey?" (I think she says NJ).

and

"What am I...a pom-pom waving back seat bimbo?"

There was one in "The Voice"; though it didn't follow the "What am I" wording exactly, it's still in the same spirit. It was when Elaine got back with Puddy after breaking up with him, although claiming they weren't actually back together, and Jerry says "People don't just bump into each other and have sex. This isn't Cinemax"

Not that it's really the same thing, but I think there's something to be said for... "You're Batman!" "Yeah, yeah, I *am* Batman!"

Actually, Staten Island.

Another one from "The Shoes":

Scene - Jerry and George in Jerry's apartment. They're both standing by the door. Elaine enters.

GEORGE (immediately, to Elaine): So, you send me to this therapist to help me with my emotional disorders, and she criticizes our script. <Tosses the script to Jerry.> What kind of a therapist is that?

ELAINE: Well, I guess she didn't think it was funny.

GEORGE: Oh, she didn't think it was funny. What is she, Rowan & Martin? We're supposed to meet with NBC tomorrow! She completely shattered my confidence. And I'm paying for this. She's my employee!

JERRY: I thought your mother's paying for it.

GEORGE: And she slaves to earn every penny! So that someday, I may be able to walk up to a woman and say, "Yes, I'm bald, but I'm still a good person."

Yet another one from "The Shoes":

"It's cleavage! I couldn't look away! What am I, trying to win an Oscar here? This is all I have in my life." (George to Jerry, shortly after Dalrymple catches him looking at Denise Richards's cleavage - - [well, who wouldn't look?] ;)

I'm noticing that these types of lines are used a lot...they're peppered quite frequently through the characters' dialogue, and a lot of them go by really quickly and are not all that memorable. You could probably read through the scripts and come up with a large list of 'em...a daunting task, so I'll just stop here. Coogan? :)

Note: I've just transcribed "The Shoes" script for Mike's site, which is why I noticed these two, heh heh...

Yeah, Like I don't have enough to do!

Okay, I'm compiling a few lists now for the group -- taking all the suggestions for these lists:

  • What are you / Who are you
  • Superman references
  • Food creating conflicts
  • Animals - real or imagined (i.e. The Whale)

And I'm working on my own set of trivia questions -- I just want to see if I can get the answers -- I have a few tough questions -- they just need a bit of (Kruger Industrial) smoothing to refine them and make them crystal clear. I don't know the answers yet for some of them -- that's why I think it will be a tough quiz, but I'll throw in a few softballs too - People like to get some right.

best, Dan

Dear Dan,

Not as many as I originally believed - but there are probably a few more - from my Lists page:

"The Stock Tip": George to Jerry: "What are you ... a doctor?" "The Jacket": George to Jerry: "What are you ... Bud Abbott?" "The Pez Dispenser": George to Jerry: "What are you ... a baby?" "The Pez Dispenser": Jerry to George: "What are you ... Joe Hollywood?" And the aforementioned "Mannix" query from "The Limo"

I think there's an episode where George says something like:

Who am I supposed to be, Kreskin?

but I can't find it in the scripts. Does enyone else remember this line?

I just found out where I have heard the Kreskin-line before. It was not on the Seinfeld show but on Howard Stern where Gilbert Gottfried does a pretty good imitation of Jerry Seinfeld..... so not that far off. :-)
