What did you think...(first impressions)

The first Seinfeld episode I watched ever was the Parking Garage.  In a
way I thought it was the most daring sitcom I ever watched.  Where
Cheers had dealt with singles and sex, this sitcom was dealing with
stupid little problems you could see yourself in ... how often have I
lost my car!!  And trying to find a restroom at a time like this is a
bladder-bursting impossibility.
    I was hooked from then on.  After awhile it was the anchor show on
which all the others rode on Seinfeld's coat-tails.  Then I was hooked
on "The Thrusday Night Line-up."  I got really pissed when NBC would
move the shows to different nights once some of the best of the new
shows got launched, and try a another new show in that time slot.  But
after awhile, Tuesday was another line-up of good shows.  Meanwhile, you
must have noticed that in all the while they've shown Seinfeld they have
never (that I can remember) changed its time.  Even those who do not
like Seinfeld must acknowledge that if it wasn't for that show, some
pretty damn funny sitcoms would never have made the cut.  ('course some
that did, I wish never had, like The Single Guy, and [sorry folks] I
hate News Radio. I'm so glad they've moved out of the way for the riotus
ones that have filled in their times.)

According to a book I have on prime-time TV shows, Seinfeld has leap-frogged from Thursdays to Wednesdays and back again until February, 1993, when it moved to Thursdays and stayed there. It's time was also either 9:00 or 9:30 until August, 1993, when it stayed at 9:00.

Yeah, wasnt it great with "Mad About You" along with "Seinfeld"????

You know, I can't even remember the first Seinfeld that I watched. I think it was the 94-95 season. I do remember that I watched the Thursday lineup for Mad About You, a show that I had heard about and see once but I never knew when it was on before it moved to Thursdays. And I had heard about Seinfeld, but I had no idea what it was or what it was about. And there was that new medical drama that was on, but I wasn't interested in that because there was another one that season starring Mandy Patinkin who I liked. And there was this funny (albeit far from hilarious) little sitcom about twenty-somethings that seemed like your standard cookie-cutter fill in show, but it was kinda likeable. But my friends and I watched, and that cute little show (Friend's obviously) grew on us (unfortunately a few months later the media frenzy would make us sick of it). And Mad About You was pretty good. And that medical drama - when I finally allowed myself to watch it -- was incredible.

And of course, there was Seinfeld. A show that beyond everything else knew exactly what it was and what it wanted to be and didn't seem to give a damn whether you liked it or not. Because they thought it was funny.

Ya know what? They were right!

P.S. I understand NBC's strategy of launching new shows from Thursday to give them exposure and build an audience before moving them to, well, Sunday or Wednesday or Tuesday (do they actually have Monday and Friday lineups?). My question is, why don't they launch shows on Thursdays that actually have a chance of surviving on their own? I mean did Caroline in the City or Single Guy or (dare I say it) Suddenly Susan really deserve the hottest time slot in TV? Those shows aren't going to build an audience! Ever! They just aren't good enough to anchor an evening.

Guess I just miss Mad About You on Thurs.
