NBC 1 year "Jerry"

In one year the new show will be out. It's called "Jerry". Everything led up to that. But only if they can make it work. Seinfeld may be out for the count but they left the door open for a show called Jerry. Think about it, how many possible characters are left behind from the show that can play rolls in the new show. They don't even need the big 4 for this show. Just off the top of my head I can think of at least 4 spin off shows.

But what made Seinfeld was not just Jerry. In fact, Jerry was essential but the least interesting of the 4, to me. I think it was the chemistry these 4 had along with fantastic writing that made it. (Was it Jerry who constructed these episodes or was it a team of Jerry and Larry David or did they brainstorm with the whole cast in creating it, the way Lear used to do? Someone was brilliant at stuffing a half hour full of plot weavings that at times achieved brilliance). I, for one, found Jerry's SNL very unfunny. I hope this show isnt going to be more of that. Do you think Jerry wanted this change because he's egotistical and wantd to be the center instead of one of 4 or because he was just used up creatively speaking and wanted a change?

I can't read his mind. But I can hypothesize. He'd done pretty much the same thing over and over for 9 years. His character wouldnt date the same WOMAN for 9 years. Why? Because there's so much more of life to experience. So, why go on and on and on with the same comedy concept. At some point, you have to say "I'm outa here" and now was as good a time as any. If he were an obscure comedian scraping along for dimes, it would be another thing. But he's very rich now, and if being that rich doesnt give you the courage to branch out and try something new to stimulate yourself, then wealth is pointless. Wealth is about freedom. I think the series is ending so that one of the stars can make a break for it. The other stars on Cheers would have done more series, but they couldnt do it without Danson, so it ended. Same here. You can't have "Seinfeld" and say "But hold the Seinfeld".

Would be interesting to experiment with the same group minus Seinfeld, with a different name, just to find out what Seinfeld DID contribute. Remember one thing, tho he said "I've never held a job", he in fact HAD one and the SAME one for the whole time. Meanwhile, like good wage slaves of the 90's, Elaine and George were into all sorts of things. And Kramer, like a good sponge, was into anything BUT work. So, with those three having no anchors, it was probably good that Jerry did have one. Otherwise the group could easily spin right off the earth.

Besides Seinfeld, the other cast members did not do any writing, altho they may have contributed ideas. Seinfeld and David collaborated on a lot of the early shows (inspiring the meeting with NBC and writers block seen during season 4); by the 3rd "season" there was a regular writing team. A good bit of George's character was taken from David's personality (albeit, much of it "hidden"). Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide both have excellent Seinfeld retrospectives out, with each episode listed with writers,synopsis, guest stars, and critique. EW is a little more detailed in its episode guide, but TV Guide has a synopsis of each season, as well as individual episodes, - describing the momentum the show gained during a particular year, criticisms it may have picked up that season, etc. Plus, the essay at the begging of TV Guide is the best I have seen, with some interesting quotes from the cast members and David, as well as excellent points if you ever get in one of those debates about the "style" of humor the show gave us. If you're a big fan of the show, I reccomend both of these. I haven't seen anything else that is as detailed (including the book by David Wild). You can buy both mags for something like 8 or 9 bucks combined.

I find it interesting that George was based on David. George is easily the most PATHETIC character on the show, the one who constantly makes moral compromises.
