I'll let "rerics" answer your question for sure. But I do remember visiting the city in the mid 80s and you couldn't even see the statue (Statute?!) because it was totally surrounded by scaffolding. If I remember correctly, when the cleaning job was done and the scaffolding came down, she was indeed a brown color. I think she's corroded to green again now.
