Food Question- What is a calzone?

Picture a piece of pizza dough folded into a turnover, and you got a calzone. I believe a traditional calzone is filled with ricotta, mozzarella and possibly ham, but nowadays they can be filled with lots of different things. Jeff Laderman

I've never had a calzone, but according to George there is eggplant in them.

A calzone is a stuffed pizza. The pizza sauce, cheese and toppings are inside.

You can have a cup of pizza sauce on the side to dip your calzone in! Yummy!

Oh boy. A calzone is like a pizza with the stuff on the inside. What is in them depends on where you go and what you order. Its like an italian burrito- -only not. I live to email, I email to live; Newsgroups are a supplemental thrill.

That is a good illustration. But I must add that one first takes some pizza dough, oils it, rolls it out into the shape of a square, and then places green onions, cheese (usually mozzarella), meat (usually ham or beef, but not chicken or turkey), garlic, some spices, and tomato sauce, AND THEN (this is the important part) folds the square diagonally over so as to produce a triangle! This triangle will look a little bit like a "turnover" after it is done. That's the typical "calzone" available at a "pizza parlor."

I just saw an episode of Seinfeld where George gets his eccentric boss of the Yankees hooked on Calzones which he gets each day at a local Italian cafe. Can anyone tell me what is in them. They appear to be a pocket bread with some type of meat and other ingredients in them. Are they commonly available? I have never heard of them before.

Any info greatly appreciated

A calzone is a pizza folded over so the ingredients are on the inside, I used to work for a pizza place.

Not that simple. I always thought it had to have ricotta as well, otherwise it's a stromboli. Is this correct?

Calzone is like a pizza that is folded over so looks like a semicircle stuffed with what would be on top of the pizza. They are then baked the same way. I discovered them in Italy in 1966 while travelling. The little bistro that made them would add a hard boiled egg for some reason. You eat it and look out for the naplam as the boiling hot cheeze and stuff burns your mouth. Dangerous but good.
