Elaine and George: what's the story here?

Ever since THE PICK, I've been confused as too what kind of relationship Elaine and George have. In an early episode it is made clear that there is no Elaine and George without Jerry. However, the show certainly makes them seem like they are more than just acquantances through Jerry, but good friends. After all, Elaine got George a job, they went to the flea market together, there was something in THE KEYS, one had the other keys. Anyway I could go on with examples, but then in THE PICK Elaine doesn't send George a x-mas card (well at least not the same one she sent everyone else). What's the deal here? Are George and Elaine close friends or just acquantances?

I don't see the confusion. George and Kramer are Jerry's friends. Elaine is Jerry's ex-girlfriend. George and Kramer meet Elaine through Jerry and now they're all part of a "gang". In fact, there was an episode which dealt with George's inability to relate to Elaine without Jerry being around.

Now, Newman is clearly Kramer's friend :-)
