Why did Puddy become a main character?

When the last season began David Puddy all of a sudden became like one of the regulars! Why is that?

Um, because he's funny?

No really, I don't have an answer.  And I don't think
you'll find one in here.  Maybe someone at NBC knows,
but this is not a fair question to ask a newsgroup.

Maybe because they knew they'd need someone to have Elaine interact with since she wouldn't be available all the time because of her pregnancy. And perhaps since they didn't know how much time Elaine would need, they signed Puddy up for a generous amount.

I don't know, just a thought.

Could it be the raises the three cast members received this year? Notice they are carrying most of the shows with very few secondary characters. The Seinfelds, The Costanzas, etc.. We know Wayne Knight is doing 3rd Rock, So maybe Puddy works cheap.

Actually, Seinfeld was hoping to bring in Robin Mirsky and her "Mirskhead family" early this year and get rid of Puddy. Unfortunately Robin died and Seinfeld had no options left but to go and stretch out Puddy

It's probably because he's the querkiest, strangest, and genuinely comical boyfriend she's had, who is just dense enough to withstand her chronic PMS she's been having lately w/o taking it personally.

I read somewhere that Puddy (isn't it spelled PUTTY?) is only going to be in about half a dozen episodes, just as a wacky on again/off again love interest of Elaine's, kind of like Chandler's red-headed "girlfriend of 4 episodes" on Friends. He hasn't become a real main character and won't.

My girlfriend didn't get that remark either...I assume Jerry still writes a lot of this stuff, and speculated that he has observed that interesting guys don't do as well as cro-mags sometimes, and thought maybe he feels the need in his personal life to get an edge by being wiser or more savvy than the women he approaches...

I guess that great big heap o' money doesn't hurt either, upon reflection...

Maybe I'm just not making sense. My g.f. is just shaking her head...never mind! :)

That's what's so great about the show, they aren't afraid to just bring on an actor for one episode or twenty. Plus, he has a great delivery of his lines.
