What loose ends should be tied up at the end of the Seinfeld series? We know this will eventually happen. First a thought, then a couple ideas.
"Seinfeld" is, IMHO, falling into the trap many programs get into at the end of their run: it's getting too extreme and simplistic.
In the first season, Elaine cracks us up with, her Aussie accent imitation, "Maybe the dingo ate your baby." In this season, Kramer's got a cartoon- sized barrel of paint-remover (I think) to take the lines off his section of the highway. I suppose if they were to put a reference to the insane Australian mother *these* days, they'd have the whole episode occur *in* Australia with full reference to what the heck she was refering to. As it was, she was bored at a party. *Sophisticated* use of wild references, people!
On the Kramer highway thing, suppose instead Kramer and Jerry were talking about an increase of lanes on the highway and Kramer said that he could fix that on *his* section, and Jerry goes *What?* Kramer says non-chalantly, "Oh, yeah, I got a section of highway." And Jerry's clueless that Kramer sponsors a section of highway, because Kramer only sponsors it in *name,* utterly neglects it. "Oh, yeah," Kramer says, "I've sponsored my section since 1985, Jerry!" Then Kramer adds, distracted, "But I don't think I'll remove that lane line--if someone sees me, they'll be *nagging* me to clean up the place," as if that's for chumps. What I'm trying to contrast here is Kramer coming in with highway signs, cluttering up Jerry's "house," being too *obvious* in the humor. And it wasn't even in character for Kramer. Work at it people!
A final season should be excellent instead of a swan song.
The loose ends should be tied up in amusing ways. Elaine and Kramer are engaged to be married *if* still they aren't married in 50 years. Could we have a vignette or episode where Elaine, bitter and wry at 87, and Kramer, in his goofy dilapidated late-eighties getting ready for a wedding--*theirs.* It could conceivably be done with cleverness, warmth, and sophisticated humor, I think.
And Babu wants to kill the Very Bad Man, Jerry Seinfeld. They can find a good way to have Babu kill Jerry, I bet. Suggestion: Babu gets a VISA to the U.S., is thwarted in attempts to kill Jerry throughout the final season. (But it isn't so frequent as to be a show *about* the hunted Jerry - Jerry probably only *slowly* becomes aware of Babu, perhaps at first suspecting Joe Divola is after him again. And at least one of the foils on Babu's attempts has to be social rules/customs.) And then Babu finally succeeds in his dark wish in a way you don't normally think of as a way to murder someone. Something involving an everyday danger like restaurant food, or taxis, or elections. Pure blue skying, here, but I hope they're planning, again, clever, warm, even insightful humor--the sorts of things that are the signature of the best "Seinfeld" episodes. Make sure the final shows have that signature, too, please.
(I am speaking as if TPTB are reading this, but even if they aren't, I can suppose some future powers that will be are out there.)
