Jerry Seinfeld 8th in 50 greatest TV icons

The king of late-night TV is also TV Land and Entertainment Weekly's greatest TV icon. Alive or not. On the air or not. Johnny Carson is number one on this new list.

But Jerry Seinfeld is eighth. Not bad in a list of 50 all-time greats.He edges out Homer Simpson in ninth. and Dick Clark is 10th. Others in the top ten are Lucille Ball, loved at number two. Oprah Winfrey's third. Bill Cosby with his fatherly advice is fourth. The way it is, is that Walter Cronkite is fifth. Carol Burnett and Mary Tyler Moore are next.

Deeper into the top 50 list of TV icons is the early cast of "Saturday Night Live," the Not Ready for Primetime Players, along with Ed Sullivan, William Shatner, George Clooney, Alan Alda, Sarah Jessica Parker and others. David Letterman and Regis Philbin are named as TV icons. But, not Jay Leno. There's Jennifer Aniston but none of her "Friends."

I'm glad Jerry, Lucille, Mary, Carol and Walter are in the top 10. Terrific choices!

I was very disappointed not to see Steve Allen's name listed. He created The Tonight Show; only later did Jack Parr and then the great Johnny Carson host it. Plus he introducing so many of TV's icons - Don Knox, Tom Poston... He was a genius innovator back in the 50's.

I agree. Steve Allen was terrific! He was so talented, not only as a comedian, but as a writer and a musician.

Was Jerry even the biggest icon on his own show? Arguably, it was just as much the Jason Alexander show in that Seinfeld was largely based on the misadventures of George Costanza.
