Oh, here's a list of the best Seinfeld episodes ever (in my opinion)
I'm not sure you can directly compare sitcoms from VERY different time periods in our history. The whole milieu that surrounded I Love Lucy, Burns and Allen, Jack Benny, or even Dick Van Dyke (the best sitcoms of the first 20 years of net- work TV) was SO different from what came later.

Some excellent points Bob, but in your list of the best sitcoms of the first 20 years of network TV how could you not mention *The Honeymooners*, IMHO one of the best sitcoms of all time and without a doubt an extremely influential show? Seinfeld is *definitely* my favourite sitcom of the 90's but is tied with *All In The Family* for post-1970 sitcoms in my books. Both shows touched subjects that no other sitcom dared to. However AITF had a lot of dramatic themes whereas in Seinfeld nothing is too serious to joke about, which is part of it's charm.

Hi...in my post I forgot about Gleason (although I think a lot of his very best work was on the big screen) and should have included him...though that takes nothing away from the other shows I mentioned. I do have to say that the Gleason shows focused far more completely on only a pair of performers (him and Art Carney) than the others I mentioned, which were much more complex in structure and ensem- ble-centered. All In the Family was both comedy and social comment for its time, and very effective...but I think Seinfeld is no less a social commentary for the 90s than AITF was for the 70s. We live in a much more selfish and shallow time, and the generation born from about 1950 onward is far less likely to look beyond its own individual and collective noses than its immediate predecessors who had Vietnam to grapple with. Seinfeld knows this, and he's using his show to satirize that shallowness and comment on how it causes his main characters to tie themselves up in knots. He's a social critic, maybe even a moral- ist, and all the more effective because he uses a light and often affectionate touch in dealing with his characters' funny flaws. P.S. I went to the University of Maryland with Peter Mehlman; we were both on the staff of the Diamondback (student newspaper). I know he's no longer with Seinfeld, but what's his new project? And will he assist Larry David in working on the final episode?
Chuckles the Clown is one of the greatest single television episodes I've ever seen. MTM's range of emotions is amazingly real and hysterically funny.
I know this is way off the subject, but I'm surprised a person named Paterno went to college anywhere other than Penn State :)
