Am I the only 1 who spotted the clue in the button popping episode? "This button used to belong to my mother." Does this mean that Elaine's mother, a woman we havn't seen or heard from, dead? Why would Elaine get a female family heirloom, excecpt for the death of her mother.

Elaine's mother is dead.
Fans debate whether Elaine's mother is dead based on dialogue about a button in 'The Caddy', with evidence from another episode suggesting she's alive.

The button may simply have been passed from one generation to the next... This does not necessarily mean that her mother is dead......

I don't think Elaine's mother is dead.
They are rerunning the whole series here in Australia at present and in an episode shown last week, Elaine, Jerry and George go to a restaurant with Elaine's father.
During the course of the episode, Elaine's father says to Elaine:-
"How's your mother?"
to whick Elaine replies:-
"Fine"
Obviously this dialogue would not have occurred if Elaine's mother was dead. It does appear however, that Elaine's parents are separated.
