Costanzas - Jewish?

Nope, that's just horse poop. The children take after the religion of which the parents agree they should, I know people who have decided to let their children be half jewish, half christian.

I remember reading several posts a while back stating that the Costanzas were Jewish with an Italian name, but I have seen considerable evidence to the contrary.

Consider: Kramer's Jewish singles party was held at a chapter of the Knights of Columbus, of which Frank is a member.

Frank sold religious articles, such as statues of Jesus and Mary, in Korea. (last night's syndicated "Rochelle, Rochelle")

There have been other subtle clues, but those are the most obvious which imply that they are indeed Italian.

Frank Costanza is Italian and he is Christian, probably Catholic. Italy is heavily populated with Catholics. He sold religious statues of Jesus and bibles and whatnot. He's a member of the Knights of Columbus, an organization for "Catholic gentlemen."

Now, what Estelle exactly is I don't know. She might be Jewish. And in Jewish families, don't the children take after the religion of the mother? Or is that just horse poop? If she's Jewish, so is George, before he converted to Latvian Orthodox, if he ever completed the ritual.

No, Jawge's shower at the health club didn't take right before he went to the staff meeting at the Yankees where everyone thought he stole some stuff because he was sweating so much.

I'm with you BH. While there are exceptions to every rule, and a Catholic father may decide to rase the son of his Jewish wife as a Christian, but the majority of the time, the mother's religion determines the child's.

And the 'Is Estelle Jewish?' question has been argued to an extreme in this group. The overriding impression is that she's Jewish. Her mannerisms and attitudes help to confirm this, and Estelle's not being willing to ride in a German car was the clincher.

Thus we can assume that George is Jewish from his mother's side, and I'm not sure if the conversion to Latvian Orthodox was completed. [email] (Hammer nail here--> <-- for a new monitor.)

We can't assume anything where Seinfeld is concerned. The question of the ethnicity of any of the Seinfeld characters has never been addressed in any of the show's episodes. Where fiction is conerned, anything can happen. Even if Estelle was born Jewish, how do you know the show's writers at some point won't portrey her as a born again Christian or some other non-Jewish persuasion? Besides, why does this really matter at all? The show is funny, the Costanza's are funny. Isn't that enough?

No, the issue has been addressed enough for us to know that Jerry is Jewish, Elaine is Catholic, and Kramer is not Jewish (though we don't know what he is). So that leaves George, which they haven't addressed--actually, Jerry once mentioned that George was an atheist. Does that count?? Hmmm...

Technically, one could argue that we don't need to know the names of the characters, or the setting of the show--as long as it's funny. But I think a lot of people--fans--would like to know about the characters, and after spending 8 or 9 years with these four, I think most of us are at such a level that the next big question is to know what religion each character is! I don't think it's so crazy...

Just an FYI, just because someone is Italian does not rule out the possibility of them being Jewish. There is a relatively big Jewish Italian population in Italy.

In a previous article, [email] ("Andrew Levin") says:

I don't mean to get into this religious conflict, but you can't be half jewish and half christian. That's like saying "I believe Jesus is the son of God, but on the other hand I don't." My mom is jewish and my dad is christian, and I admit I get presents for Hanukah and Christmas, but I still consider myself 100% jewish.

** Families will, of course, do as they please. But the point
is that for ritual purposes and by Orthodox Jewish standards,
you're born Jewish if your mother is Jewish, regardless of
your father. If your mother isn't Jewish and you want to
be, Orthodox Judaism says you need to convert.

Just an FYI, just because someone is Italian does not rule out the possibility of them being Jewish. There is a relatively big Jewish Italian population in Italy.

** While that is true, the Italian Jewish community developed
separately from the East European Jewish community, so that
the stereotyped image that Americans have of Jews doesn't
stick well to them. They don't say "oy vey" or eat bagels
and lox or talk with their hands... Well okay, they talk
with their hands, but only because they're Italian...

I know it's a bad idea to get involved in a dicsussion like this, but I can't help it. In one episode (I can't remember the name), Frank sees a picture from Tuscany, and thinks he recognizes his cousin, who he had not seen since he moved fom Italy. So Frank is definately Italian. As for Estelle, at least I have enough sense to stay out of that discussion.

Aw, hell, I'll deal with it. I think she's Italian - Sicilian to be precise. The maternal half of my family has Sicilian origins, while my paternal half is from northern Italy. So I'm well familiar with the "Sicilian temper".

This subject again? Well, okay.

But where's that F.A.Q. for this ng?! (Newman was not in ANIMAL HOUSE . . . .)

Frank is Italian. Frank is Catholic. Estelle is Jewish. Estelle is not Italian. George is Jewish by virtue of his mother. George is not Latvian Orthodox becuase the ceremony was never completed.

That should be "you're"

That should be "retarded"

That should be "they're"

That should be "Jewish"

That should be "thinking

Nice language. Good for the kids in the ng.

Wrong. They are considered Jewish if the mother is Jewish. It doesn't matter what the race/religion of the "father" is because it can't be substantiated that he is the true father.
