Seinfeld's up and downs Survey

With all the talk in the group recently about how Seinfeld is supposedly going downhill, how would you rate each season, on a scale of 1 to 10? Here's my opinion:

I agree that the show was slow to get off the ground but I think the best season was #5. It stayed at a level of hilarity that season #4 only peaked at a few times - though I hate to sound harshly critical of 4.

Also, so far I think this season is worse than last - not better.

Can anyone recommend a good reference book that has synopses of the episodes. W/o something like that it's hard to come up with the sweeping generalities posters here seem to favor.

    The ratings for past seasons are always subjective and
everyone has the right to come up with his own...but
it's WAY too early to judge THIS season. Last night's show
("The Betrayal," 11/20) proved that.
     Check this out...every year since the beginning, the
show has started off rather slowly each year, then hit its
stride about 4 to 6 weeks into the season and built toward
a strong  finish. That was even true of the very first episodes
of the show in 1989-90...the 1989 pilot didn't even have the
whole cast in place (Julia Louis-Dreyfus didn't appear until
the first post-pilot episode in 1990). Most of the early episodes
seem a lot simpler in structure and slower in pace, and all the
characters took a while to define. This year's no exception...
they're trying new things, new wrinkles in the old relation-
ships, and seem to have gotten into the groove with the last
three episodes (especially last night's "Betrayal" which may
well go into the classic episode category).
     One other thing; compared to all the other sitcoms on
the air, with the possible exception of "Frasier" and "3d
Rock", even a comparatively weak Seinfeld episode is
likely to be funnier than the best episodes of other sitcoms.
And the best of them from each season rank with the all-
time television classics, like the best episodes of "I Love
Lucy", "Cheers" or "Mary Tyler Moore." This is entertain-
ment, folks...let's relax and enjoy it, and have as much fun
with it as Jerry and the gang seem to be having.

Season One(neglecting the pilot episode) had "The Stakeout" and "The Male Unbonding" were pretty good early efforts.

Season Two starts with four solid episodes in "The Ex-girlfriend", "The Pony Remark", "The Jacket", and "The Phone Message."

"The Note" and "The Pen" were the first and third episodes of season three and very strong.

"The Trip" Parts 1 and 2 and "The Pitch/The Ticket" are the first three episodes of the fourth season and very good (although the classic fourth season did keep getting better)

Season Five started extremely strong with "The Mango" and "The Puffy Shirt" being the first two episodes.

Season Six started with "The Chaperone" and "The Big Salad" which were both pretty good.

Season Seven started with "The Engagement" which was good although the next few episodes were merely average.

Season Eight's third and fourth episodes were quite strong in "The Bizzaro Jerry" and "The Little Kicks" after two other pretty decent episodes.

Season Nine however started very poorly with "The Butter Shave," "The Voice," and "The Blood" being at best average, and at worst awful. "The Serenity Now" was at least a strong average to slightly above average episode.

So, in conclusion, I would say that your claim is not valid that all season start slow. I would say that most seasons, except maybe the fourth and fifth have lulls and hopefully season nine just started with one. It seems to have improved and hopefully will continue to improve.

Obviously it ain't the show it once was...but "The Betrayal" was a good, risky effort. They'll never touch the glory days again though ("The Limo," "The Outing," etc. al)
