Sorry if these are dumb questions, being English I know nothing about baseball!
(1) Who is Mr Steinbrenner in real life exactly. (2) Does he really talk like that. (3) Are the baseball players depicted in Seinfeld (Don Maddingly etc) real characters, or are they made up. (4) Likewise Merv Griffin, is he a real talk show host?

He was a band singer in the 40's and 50's then hosted an afternoon talk show back in the 70's. He is now a very rich Hotel/Casino owner. You can see him sitting in the Atlantic City audience at the end of The Chaperone.
Oh thanks you live and learn. We have people like that in charge of football(soccer!) teams in Britain. Doug Ellis at Aston Villa or the late Peter Swales at Manchester City. They are not usually quite so famous as Mr Steinbrenner obviously is though. Until recently I always assumed he was fictional.

IMHO thats the funniest episode in the final series (although I didn't see them all because the f*%"ing BBC put them on at totally irregular times in the early hours of the morning, yet we still get bloody Dads Army which is 30 years old at peak times, they are even showing it yet again as a tribute to the Queen Mother???). Anyway UK paramount is about to do series 9. I hope they go round again and start at one.

According to Kenny Kramer, he didn't mind it. If I remember the tour correctly Steinbrenner watched the show and got the joke behind the Jay Buhner thing.
FYI David is a huge Yankee fan and followed the minor league Yankee prospects (footie fans think reserve and youth sides). He got really excited about this young prospect called Jay Buhner (according to Kenny anyway) and was really pissed off when he heard about the trade. Frank Costanza's line was actually Larry David getting back at Steinbrenner, he really wanted to say that to Steinbrenner for so long and finally had the chance to do so, and he did. :)

He hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live once and performed a skit where he was a grocery store manager.
