JDL series

JDL was in another series on NBC. "Day By Day". A professional couple quit their jobs to run a day care out of their house. Their next door neighbor (JDL) is a really self-absorbed yuppie (redundant, I know). But she was by far the funniest thing on the show (except for when they had the Brady Bunch on).

It always surprised me that she was really good on that show because I thought she was kind of lame on SNL. But that was a long time ago and obviously she's improved.

You've got Julia Loius-Dreyfus (JLD) confused with the Jewish Defense League (JDL). 8-)

Anyway, I've noticed that a few people who lame on SNL were funny in other situations. I can only conclude that the writing on SNL is/was to blame. You know the cliche, "If it's not on the page, it's not on the stage."

For example, the zombie-like SNL that is now on. Maybe one sketch on the whole show is funny anymore. This was brought forcibly home to me one night a couple of years ago. I was watched Howard Stern's old show and after it was over tuned to SNL to see if anything was happening. They were rerunning a show from the classic years with Steve Martin as the host. I had already missed the first half hour so I'm not sure what I had missed. I had seen the show when it originally aired so the jokes weren't new. And yet I laughed my way through the rest of the show. Martin did "King Tut", "Theodoric of York, Medieval Barber" and danced with Gilda. They did the Nerds and "Psychic Headlines", etc. etc. Today's show is lucky to have 5 minutes worth of laughs in it.

Well, I'm trying to remember if she did any characters that appeared more than twice. The only one I can think of is the "Consuela and Chi-Chi" skits she did with Mary Gross, where they played two sisters with heavy hispanic accents who critiqued TV shows. (Those of you who are drooling, slobbering JLD fans will be pleased to know she usually did those skits in fishnet nylons and a short skirt.) :)

       I'm sure if they said 'Here is a good Ghostbuster thing to do'
       he would go and do eet and do a great job at eet."
