Why did Jerry call Kramer "Kessler" in the 11 years ago thingy? (some might know this, but it is a pretty obscure reference)

What do you mean no one will get this. There have been threads here for weeks about how Jerry called him Kessler in the pilot episode. That is what Kramers name was before it was a series.

Not everyone is like this, but I think it was a joke about the nature of friendships amongst those in their late-teens to mid-20s. Think about it -- someone you see every other day or so who you are close enough to so that you lend small amounts of cash back and forth, etc. -- you don't really need to know their last name! And, consequently, people end up being friends for a quite some time and never know what the other's last name is. One might hear it, but have no reason to use it or remember it. If you forget their # (unlikely), you look in your address book and it's usually just listed under the person's first name. You don't really have a reason to mail them anything if you see them all the time, so you don't need to address any envelopes. Even if you do, it's usually a card of some sort and you can address it with just their first name. Inside, of course, you sign it with just your first name.

But, it doesn't make sense since Kramer goes by his last name usually!

I barely remember the first episode and definitely can't remember Kramer's first appearence. Was it telling him what happened in the Mets game? What was going on when Jerry called him Kessler?
