seinfeld ratings

Last week's ratings of Seinfeld, the first episode after the Thursday move, showed that it was the most-watched episode ever. If I remember correctly, it got about a 27.9 share, about 10 points higher than usual, meaning about 10 million more homes than usual. No mention was made on how it ranked, but the complete list should be out today or tomorrow in the LA Times.

Another article about the NBC executive reorganization said that they were now using Seifeld as their "flagship" show, since Cheers is leaving.

did you notise home improvement shot up to 2 i think that show sucks yet people like it better than seinfeld. ANyone know why?

Ah... with respect to the learned Mr. Lee, I think Home Improvement is enjoying apparently superior ratings because they reflect the baby-boomer interest in what is considered "family" entertainment. Among the younger crowd, the crowd which is actually more significant to advertisers because it constitutes the future and not merely the present, Seinfeld is doing rather well, well enough that NBC has moved it after Cheers in a deliberate attempt to woo the Cheers audience and make Seinfeld the front-running sitcom at that network.

Nobody suggests that HI is better comedy than Seinfeld. HI did not win Best

imho, it is because most people in this country are gentiles. HI is real gentile humor. seinfeld is profoundly jewish humor. certainly gentiles can appreciate jewish humor and vice versa. but HI enjoys a resonance among the goyishe, and seinfeld enjoy resonance among MOT.

i'm gentile, but my wife is jewish (and east coast originated) and she "gets" a lot more of it than i do. i enjoy the interactions, am amused, etc. for my wife, it's like being at home. :-)

i think home improvement sucks, too, btw.

I agree, it definatly sucks. When I first heard it was comming on I thought it would be great because I saw Tim Allen when he was doing stand-up and he was really funny. It was better when you imaged what he was talking about instead of seeing him act it out to a laugh tract.

Seinfeld is a funny program at the cutting edge of TV humour. Most people don't like or appreciate the cutting edge, they want something a little more normal.

Think of it in terms of eating out. Most people will eat a salad and roast chicken. A few might try something like venison. But very few will try 'exotic' dishes like calamari. I think Seinfeld is having a big influence on other shows and eventually the mainstream will become more like Seinfeld. But that will be a slow process. If Seinfeld becomes a top rated show, I suspect it will be because it has become much tamer. I hope that never happens.

I agree with the above, more or less. But there is another, BIG, reason that Home Improvement gets bigger ratings than Seinfeld: kids watch it. I doubt that many young children watch Seinfeld. So even if the same number of adults watch both shows (and I'd guess more elderly people prefer HI to S), adding the kids to HI's total would easily account for its relatively higher rating.

My big question is, how can we change this? Though I do not think that it is any BIG problem, considering the chances of S ever being cancelled in the near future are very slim. Lets just keep Jerry to ourselves.
