The time it takes depends on the number and sophistication of the players. When I used to play it the game would take three or four hours.

...depending on the players and roll-of-the-dice, it's possible a game can go on forever.
I have known people that have played Risk for a few hours a day for a month. They would take a day off every once in a while though.
I think that is nuts though.

When I was in college, we used to play a lot of Risk. Typically, the games would start at about 8pm, and often were not finished 'til 3 or 4 am.

What you said is true. I never said we were all good at playing Risk. Only one of my friends was actually a very good Risk player. He was really into world dominiation which is why he went into ROTC in college. I was a terrible Risk player. I think in all the games I played, I only won at most 3 games.
I haven't played that game since maybe 1979 or so back in my college fraternity. Two or three hours sounds about right. Seems to me that the two best places from which to launch were either Kamchatka (which was always the toughest to capture) or -- even better -- southeast Asia.

Our games lasted days. Apparently you never participated in pilgrameges to Austrailia making bibles and then eventually spreading good cheer and destruction to the rest of the world. Hey, we made the game fun.
