Non English speaker needs help

Hi In 'Male Unbonding' Jerry and Elaine were talking about a guy that Elaine kicked in the groin, and who did not cry. And she says: "I got the cab." And Jerry replies: "A couple of tough monkeys." Could anyone tell me what these two sentences mean ? thx

Elaine kicked the guy in the groin so she could get in a cab instead of him. "A couple of tough monkeys" must mean the guy is tough because he didn't cry after being kicked in the groin, and Elaine is tough for kicking him in the groin to steal his cab.

I don't claim to know the etymology (if that's the right word) of the phrase "tough monkey," but my earliest recollection of it is SSgt. James R. 'Fatso' Judson (Ernest Borgnine) using it to describe Pvt. Angelo Maggio (Frank Sinatra) in "From Here to Eternity."
