Worst Episode of Seinfeld?

I think the last episode was horrible, because it wasn't realistic, Jerry tried to fit too many people in. The show was great because it was odd yet possible. Anyone care to comment on this?

I agree with you 100%. The last episode was definately the worst ever.

Actually, it was Larry David who wrote the final episode and he HAD to fit all those people in. I think that given the contraints that David was working under, he wrote a very good episode. Sure there was more he could have done with it, but then it wasn't going to be a 3 hour episode. Much of what David wanted to include was dumped due to time issues. Some scenes that were filmed never made it into the episode.

I didn't enjoy it that much the first time I saw it, mostly because I had the "final episode black cloud" hanging over my head. I spent more time reflecting this was the last new episode I'd ever see, and spent less time actually watching it. Over the next few months, I rewatched the tape, and the episode keeps getting better in my estimation.

For those who didn't like it, If you've only seen it once, that's at least part of the reason. Give it another shot.

As for the worst episode, I'd say the pilot.  First episode, very little
plot, poor characterization, Kramer was a non-factor, Elaine wasn't even
a cast member yet, George was a walking Woody Allen impression, and
Jerry, well Jerry was Jerry.  If I was in the focus group, I wouldn't
have thought the show had a chance.

I agree. Knowing what the show eventually evolved into, I'm glad it made it, but based on just that episode, I honestly don't understand why. Criticize the ninth season all you like, but I still believe the first season was the worst.

However, my personal pick for worst episode is "The Bookstore". The "toilet book" subplot was so bad I found it almost unwatchable. Elaine's Peterman party makeout started off well, but then it disintegrated into that stupid yam-yam stuff. The ricksha plot went absolutely nowhere. The one good idea in the episode was Uncle Leo shoplifting and the discovery of his former "crime of passion", but that idea was underdeveloped too.

Agree and disagree at the same time. The pilot was by far the weakest episode of the series, missing Elaine and a sense of who the rest of the characters were. But at the same time, compared with almost all the series comedy TV that was on the air in 1989 when the pilot was made, it was still significantly better than anything else (with the possible exception of Cheers). That's why the NBC West Coast entertainment execs believed in it, and why they gave it a chance in the spring of 1990 with a short run that found it an audience.

Incidentally, the focus groups that tested the show in 1989, both before and after the pilot initially aired, DID hate "Seinfeld." It scored worse than any other show NBC has ever tested before or since. But the pilot got decent ratings, winning its time slot on first play in 1989 with a 20 share, and when those numbers were matched in the short summer 1990 run, Seinfeld was on its way. The general public knew better than the focus groups...

I think your wrong. I enjoyed seeing all of those people from the past episodes. I think the thing that people didn't like is the ending.

You're right. The last episode was great, with all the jokes from the past, but people expected a bigger ending, something that will surprise everyone and will change things for good, not for a year...

i liked the last episode too. and the way i see it, considering the semi-sudden quitting of the show, they left it open to return and surprise everyone if they decide they are not yet ready to quit. thats what justifies their one-year jail sentence. just a thought.
