❓ Question
Poster questions George's claim about pulling a hamstring by kicking out tucked-in bed covers, tests the theory, and shares findings that calf rather than hamstring strain seems more likely.
I was just thinking about a scene from "The Limo" where the limo stops after getting a flat tire and George and Jerry briefly consider getting out and making a run for it. George says he can't because he has a bad hamstring. He said he hurt it by kicking out the covers from a tightly made bed. Now I'm just wondering how the upper thigh muscle could be strained from kicking at a tucked in bedspread with your feet. If anything, I could see pulling a calf muscle, but I don't see how anyone could damage a hammy that way. So I tried it out a few minutes ago. I tucked my comforter very tightly and slipped into bed. My feet were flat, sideways, heel to heel, and I then began to loosen the sheets gradually with my toes. I did feel a little tightening of the calf muscles but I hardly felt any tension at all in my thighs.
That's all. Just felt like sharing.
Dave (maybe Larry Charles likes the word 'hamstring'?)
Aw man. I never expected this kind of response from you, Mr. Lists Guy. :-)
Hey, new list. Let's count how many times each character blinks!
Ok, here's how it works. I live in South Florida, and that's Miami Hurricanes country. Now most people down here either went to one of the Big Three or they know someone who did, do allegiances are formed that way. Generally fans of one of the three despise the other two, and their fans, with a deep passion. Me, I have no affiliation with any of them, so I buck the trend and just root for all of my home state teams to play well. I still have an old Ap/UPI poll from about 8 years ago that had Miami, Fla and Fla St ranked 1-2-4 in the country. (I think Nebraska was #3.) That kind of state dominance tickles me. But this year I was rooting for Fla all the way because FSU coach Bobby Bowden screwed his team royally by letting senior QB Chris Wienke play every down of every game last year, thereby preventing his backup, Chris Rix, from picking up any actual game experience. I wanted this stupid move last year to cost him dearly this year, so I'm sorta pleased that the Seminoles have three losses already and are out of the top 25.
So I was happy to see the Gators win, and I'm waiting patiently for the Canes to crush Nebraska or Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl and earn their 5th National Championship.
I'm just glad I am not the only one that thinks about these things. I think if there were grant money available to study Seinfeld, Dave should certainly be entitled to it.
After such a careful study, we have to assume that either George doesn't know his hamstring from his calf. Or that perhaps in such a freezy to break free, George did pull his hamstring in a fit of tension.
Was The Limo aired before or after the scence in the hotel with Lupe(sp?)?
Nood lateral thinking. I'm going with the first one. George likes to pretend he's athletically inclined and hamstring injuries are common in sports.
Before.
But the scene with Lupe was beautiful.
Lupe: Hello. I have more towels.
George: Oh good, good, come in. Come in, welcome. I'm George. And this is Jerry, over there, on the phone, that's Jerry. And you are, um?
Lupe: Lupe.
George: Lupe. That's very nice, very nice. Listen, are you going to be making up the bed in the morning?
Lupe: Yes.
George: Fine. Excellent. Could you do me a favor? Could you not tuck the blankets in? 'Cause I can't sleep all tucked in.
Lupe: Oh, yes, yes.
George: Yes, I like to just be able to take the blankets and swish them and swirl them, you know what I mean? You know, I don't like being all tucked in. I like to have a lot of room, you know I like to have my toes pointed up in the air. Just like to scrunch up the blankets.
Lupe: Yes, yes. It's too tight to sleep.
George: Exactly, you know what I'm talking about, right?
Lupe: It's too tight. (Gesturing towards Jerry) Him too?
George: Uh, Jerry, you want your blankets tucked in?
Jerry: Excuse me, what?
George: You want your blankets tucked in?
Jerry: What blankets?
George: When Lupe makes up the beds in the morning.
Jerry: I don't know, whatever they do.
Lupe: I tuck in? Yes?
Jerry: Tuck in, tuck in.
George: Alright, so that's one tuck and one no-tuck.
Lupe: Okay.
George: Yeah. One second sweetheart. Jerry, I really think it'd be easier if you didn't tuck.
Jerry: Excuse me, fine, you don't want me to tuck, put me down for a no-tuck.
George (to Lupe): Two no-tucks.
Jerry: Uh, hang on a second, You know what? Changed my mind, make it a tuck.
George: You just said you weren't tucking.
Jerry: I'm tucking! Hello? Hello? They hung up on me. They don't know where Kramer is anyway.
George: Alrighty, so. That's one tuck and one no-tuck. Got that?
Jerry: Excuse me, um, did you see a piece of paper on the nightstand here earlier today crumpled up like a napkin?
Lupe: Oh, yes, yes. I throw away when we clean the room.
Jerry: Oh, okay, thanks.
Lupe: Thank you.
George: Thank you.
Lupe: Bye-bye.
George: Alright, Lupe, bye-bye now.
Lupe: Bye.
George: Bye-bye.

Does anyone recall George's question to the limo driver when Jerry and George were wondering whether or not the driver could hear them talking in the back... something about them picking up the (driver's) sister...
Interesting -- this happened to me just the other night. The bed was tucked ever so tightly. I got in, layed (laid?? I can never remember which) there for a while, trying to create some roaming room in the toe area. Then I flipped over on my stomach and lifted with my heels. If I hadn't worked out that afternoon, I probably would have gotten a hamstring injury. As luck would have it, I was still limber (like an olympic gymnast).
