Fans debate whether Kramer is intelligent or dim-witted, with most agreeing he's subconsciously brilliant and ahead of others despite appearing out of touch.
I have had a recent argument over the intelligence of Cosmo Kramer. I fell that he is actually ahead of everyone else on the show. He is the master of the show. He is the smartest one, but some of my roomates feel that the K-man is behind everyone else and dummer than everyone else on the show.
What do you think?

Michael Richards answered that in an interview a few years ago. As he developed the Kramer character in the first few shows he made him a bit dumb-witted and slow. Michael then changed the character to be out of touch with people by being,, in his words, "five steps ahead" (you are correct). Remember it is he who comes up with the creative ideas and schemes. And he usually wins out in some sort of strange way.

Yeah, Kramer definitely had a "Forrest Gump" air about him... I think one could accurately describe him as "subconsciously brilliant."

Don't forget "The Snub", when Kramer snubs Gale and she likes it. He ends up going out with her.

I read somewhere - although I can't remember where - that Michael Richards said for the first half dozen episodes or so he tried to play Kramer like he was a bit slow but that after that - for most of the show - he felt it was better to play him as if he was like indeed in a way much more intelligent than the rest.
Maybe he's a kind of idiot savant - something like the Dustin Hoffman character in Rain Man - hyper-intelligent in some ways, extremely dumb in others.

I don't see it as being smarter or dumber compared to the other characters. Kramer simply has a different perspective, outlook or approach to life. He definitely goes outside the "norm" much of the time but I do not view him more or less intellgent.
