Why does George make us smile and cringe? George represents the dumb-ass part of virtually all of us. George's life is full of the faux pas' and gaffes that we all make now and again. At that crucial juncture between stimulus and response, where most of us would pause and consider the consequences, George just barges in.
Paradoxically, George has more balls than most ....who would have the nerve to fake a disability to get a job? OK...even if it *did* have a private bathroom ;> ? George allows us to live vicariously....most people at some point in their lives would have liked to have resigned and abused their boss in no uncertain terms. Who would then have the gall to turn up at the workplace and act as though nothing has happened? Maybe slip him a mickey at a social function too? George actually does it, and armed with shamelessness and a complete lack of dignity, he almost gets away with it. But one of many, many instances....
Sure..we all laugh and cringe at George....but I think a lot of the laughter comes from our recognition that all of us have a little piece of George in us and when we see it, it's both funny and uncomfortable.
