I have a couple dozen sets of Seinfeld bumperstickers including the famous phrases. " My Little Man is an Idiot" "My Boys Can Swim" and "Master of My Domain". Set includes 11 bumperstickers and one Vandelay Industries Parking Sticker for your car. This is numbered 070989 for the date of the first episode airing. Also a ==:-} Kramer emoticon static sticker!

Yes,since they used it in that 1 episode,its part of the writers creativety to look back on other episodes.And since Vandelay Ind has become the official fan club(now mailing list),they thought it would be a running gag.since the cast has to make up evreything all the time.And its usually George who comes up with it,he has to lie alot,he needs a name to keep. thank you for having such an insightful post,i like that in these people,please read my message,SEINFELD FANS READ THIS!!!!in the newsgroup.Please reply to this.
"Art Vandelay" was also used in Bizarro Jerry, when George asked the girl at the company where Kramer 'worked' if Art Vandelay was in, because he had an apppointment. He then "dropped" a pic of Man Hands on her desk, and he asked her out.

I don't know if it was me that was confused (although I can't recall what I wrote - nor do I really care). I was referring however, to the earlyier episode that Sarah has added - The Stakeout. This would probably have been the initial Art Vandelay mention I suspect. From memory, I think I only bought in after reading about confusion in spelling Vanderlay. I just added that there have been several mentions of this name, spread over many seasons - something that those who continue to correct me seem to be pointing out as well. I wish I'd said that!
Because if they ever need a fake name as an excuse for anything, he's already there, in their heads, so that it doesn't sound made up. They know who they're talking about, Art Vandelet (French spelling), the importer/exporter. He's in latex. He started out as Art Corvilet in the episode "The Stakeout" but George changed it at the last minute to Vandelet. He was an architect. Since then they've been using it and it's become a running gag. I first saw it in the episode with Keith Hernandez. So basically, it's just some name George made up and is used to get out of troublesome situations.
