Puerto Rican Day

Kramer accidentally set fire to the Puerto Rican flag. It was all just for fun. But a portion of the US' 2% Puerto Rican community complained and NBC pulled it from the air. People seem a little too sensitive in the US these days.

Ya , the burning of the flag upset some people PLUS when Jerry asked Kramer about all the riotous & unlawful behavior displayed on the show & Kramer comments - It's like this everyday in Puerto Rico ( not an EXACT quote but you get the idea). Personally I feel that Jerry & the writers DID NOT mean to offend anyone but really did not care because the end of the series had been announced and they decided to do a show with a little "EDGE". I still feel if they had done the show on the Saint Patrick's Day parade recounting the "gay controversey" nothing would have happened, BUT Puerto Ricans are a much more recent arriving minority & have more of a chip on their shoulders. JUST MY OPINION FROM A DISTANCE ! I'm in Los Angeles.

Burning the US flag is a constitutionally protected expression of free speech.. burning the PR flag is a insult to the community????

Burning the US flag is both legal and offensive.

Nothing was offensive, IMHO. People get bored, they protest. It's to be expected these days.

Well, if you're not Puerto Rican, you can't really say it wasn't offensive. I'm not one to be offended at things, but if that episode caused any problems with the Puerto Rican community, it can't be ignored. Racial insensitivity is not something that should be promoted.

True. Different people often have very different pereptions. That was one of the classic Seinfeld lines :-)

The every group can find something offensive about anything. Where does it end? Why can't we just have fun and laugh at ourselves?? I watch a lot of shows with blacks making fun of whites. When was the last time you heard a groups of whites protesting something like that? But wait till a white makes fun of a black...then all hell breaks loose. And before you know it, shows are pulled off the air.

EXACTLY. Absolutely right. I could see the puerto ricans getting upset if it was in the script that Kramer INTENTIONALLY burned the flag. But it was just out of fun. They have a lot of nerve to complain considering that so many of them are living on welfare checks from this country.

No, that's true. But I seriously wonder how many were really offended. A few making a big noise can raise the eyebrows of many others. And those many others may not have even seen the Puerto Rican Day episode. Who knows- they may not have even found it offensive at all. If Kramer had accidentally burned the American flag on Independence Day I don't think anyone would've thought bad of it at all. Surely no Puerto Rican Americans, I'll tell you that. So why not just not show the episode in Puerto Rico?

No one is saying that it should- you're absolutely right. I think that everyone is just questioning exactly what was labeled as offensive. Seriously- I wonder if anyone who is Puerto Rican and an American citizen would've been offended had Kramer burned the flag on the 4th of July. (Well, obviously, *anything* you do is going to get someone upset.) And Kramer was actually embracing the parade. He had the flag draped around his shoulders.

I think other threads have mentioned that whites are made fun of with no noise being made, but swap the situation with blacks and people complain. This isn't the case. "Saturday Night Live" makes fun of everyone. "In Living Color" made fun of every single race on the planet. They particularly made fun of blacks. Sure, a majority of the cast members were black, but they also had a few white people and even an asian guy at one point.

I think Seinfeld got in a jam only because so many people were watching it at the time. It was the second to last episode, there was all this buzz about the show, people were probably pissed off at it already, and the parade incident was basically the thing to push them over.

By the way, I remember seeing a thread earlier about Jason Alexander being on Friends. I thought it was just hypothetical talk until I saw in the TV guide that it was happening this week. I'm assuming he *isn't* playing Costanza? I also heard some time ago that he was supposed to be coming back to prime time. This was a while back, and it said that it was supposed to happen in 2001. I haven't heard anything else to support it since. Anyone know what's up with the guy? We know that Jerry is or was doing stand-up and Michael Richards is crying over the loss of his show (which wasn't nearly as horrible as everyone said), but what're Alexander and Dreyfus up to?

I think it's total bull that the puerto rican day ep was banned from TV because it supposedly offends Puerto Ricans. I can't believe that they get offended by the MILESTONE SECONT-TO-LAST episode of Seinfeld, but Ricky Martin doesn't forshame them. Hey, the unleashed that fag on us, let's retalliate by showing the Puerto Rican day episode. Who's with me?

why? It is a piece of cloth, should cloth be more important than free speach, or enjoying you're life through humor. It's not like they were burning the flag as a way of insulting anybody. If I were to see Kramer buring an American flag in a similar situation, I would take it in the spirit it was inteded, as humor.

No, that is incorrect. It has *not* been played in syndication in the US. If you feel it has been run since the original airdate, please submit a date when it was aired in the US.

Yea, it was aired in syndication like a year ago.... at least once. I don't understand why anybody would be offended by the flag (accidental because of Kramer's schleppiness) burning... :>

Not in the US. It's not part of the syndicated package. If you disagree, please provide a date when it was shown after the original airdate.

I'd love to be proven wrong on this one, since I feel that episode should be aired again. However, it hasn't been.

Not to take sides, but I doubt he wrote down the date for future reference. I also agree with you, I don't think its been shown in syndication in the US.

I wonder if the episode is aired in Puerto Rico?
