How well does SEINFELD play over there? How does it compare with other American and British comedy shows?

IMHO it blows away any other home grown comedy show I've seen here for many years. Only Fawlty Towers from over 20 years ago comes close. A lot of sitcoms over here are jaw droppingly bad. There are exceptions: The Royle Family (well written but not particularly funny), The League of Gentlemen (has it's moments but tries too hard to be weird), Operation Good Guys and Alan Partridge (both can be brilliant). Rhona was a failed attempt to copy Seinfeld and Bob Martin was the Larry Sanders Show without laughs, wit, edge or acting ability.

The UK critics I've read have all loved Seinfeld. But the BBC choose to air it near midnight for some reason so it remains a largely undiscovered gem.

We dutch people like english humor very much but i agree with the fact that english sit-coms are dissapointment (except that lenny hendry cooking comedy, that was brilliant, and absolutely fabulous is good also). Maybe it is caused 'cause english comedians usually don't play in sitcoms?

I'm one of the loyal seinfeld fans , as mentioned this show has been shown at the wrong times.

In england , this show should of been shown on say bbc2 on a friday , between 9 and 10 pm , it would of done a boom.

Or even on channel 4 , Shame really.

but luckily i have cable tv , so i can catch it twice a day in the uk , 8.30pm on the comedy channel and 2.30 am on sky one (which i generally tape)

One thing i will say about seinfeld , the last ever episode , was a major cop out , a compelation type show.

I am also a loyal UK Seinfeld fan, and I do admit that the BBC has totally screwed over any chances of Seinfeld ever having anything more than a cult following. This however was a masterstroke by the BBC, because they knew that if Seinfeld was shown at primetime the British public would acquire a taste for quality comedy, and we wouldn't settle for the crap we do now. So what did the Beeb do? They picked it up to prevent the other stations cashing in, and broadcast it at the most ridiculous time slots. Where it gets a minority audience, and they can say to each other, "You see, there's no audience for this type of show!" and then churn out the same old .......... same old It's a conspiracy I tells you! Seinfeld has a small loyal following in the UK but unfortunately was taken up by the wrong network ( BBC ) which has continually scheduled it at the most ludicrous times. It can be found on cable / satellite tv but to make an impact in the UK it has to be on the main networks. Consequently, it has not made anywhere near the impact of lesser shows like Frasier and the abysmal and never ending Friends. It still gets kind comments from media critics but I fear that it will never take off with the general public now, especially since the series has finished. I can't see a network re-running six year old US shows at peak times !

Yeah, but just imagine how it is in Bizarro UK, where Seinfeld was picked up by C4, scheduled for 9pm on Friday nights, and is now one of the biggest sitcoms on UK television. You can't walk into a HMV over in Bizarro UK without falling over the huge number of Seinfeld videos they have stacked to the ceilings. *drool* :-)

With the exception of Kramer, there are no *really* eccentric characters - no stupid one, no leader, no loveable bumbling idiot. And it doesn't have the glamour of Friends. And sadly as someone said, the chance has now gone as no channel is going to show repeats in a prime=time slot :( The UK's loss (and mine) as cable/satellite is not so popular over here.

Aw thank you very much, same to you. It wasn't too serious and I'm all better now. At least we got into Seinfeld! And I guess it's early nights until next year - that's even if the Beeb fulfill that promise! Sigh :(

As Seinfeld is so little known in the UK it is NOT too late to relaunch it at prime time tv. What we need is someone with a little initiative, someone who could understand the massive potential of the programme. There seems to be a massive amount of apathy when it comes promoting Seinfeld properly and not just in the UK. I was in ASDA /Walmart the other day and they had a huge Friends DVD stall and I thought "that could easily be Seinfeld" and it could. So if there is some entrepeneur out there who wants to make a lot of money think Seinfeld. And in the process I, and a lot of current fans, as well as those people waiting to become S fans would get a lot of pleasure into the bargain.

By the way coverage at the moment is very poor. Periahmount are currently screening Seinfeld but decided to miss out he first four series this time but this is to be expected from their substandard schedulers. Sky 1 showed series 8 a few weeks ago but I haven't seen it since; and the poor old BBC will be showing series 9 next year and if the progression of late Seinfeld broadcasting continues it will probably go out at 1:00 am.
