I am a Sienfeld fan but I agree with NBCs decision to ban the Puerta Rican day. That episode was a slap in the face at Puerta Rican's and it was pretty fucking lame anyway. I hardly laughed at all. So if they are going to ban any episode they should ban Puerta Rican day. We aren't missing much and it was very insensitive. What would have been the reaction if their was a 4th of July episode and they burned a fucking American Flag and stepped on it and shit. I bet there would have been a huge outcry. That is why Seinfeld used Puerta Ricans because it is OK to bash them and treat them like shit. The main problem with Seinfled is his racism. I have noticed it throughout his shows. He always shows blacks and minorities as bumbling clowns with outrageous accents. The gay episode showed that he is a homophobe. He makes fun of senior citizens whenever he shows Jack Klompous and other assholes down in Florida. He should stick to making shows about nothing instead of making shows that poke fun at other races.

poke fun at other races.

He's done making shows, so it doesn't really matter anymore....

does anyone here watch the Simpsons? Remember the episode in which Lisa goes to a fortune-teller, and sees her future? She got engaged to a Brittish fellow, and Homer was trying to impress him and make him feel welcome in Springfield. Of course, Homer screws it up. He accidentally sets the British flag on fire, then, attempting to put it out, covers it in manure and stomps on it.

I don't seem to remember an outpouring of English outrage or the talk of banning the reruns...in fact, I've seen that episode in syndication several times.. I suppose some groups know a joke when they see it, while others are overly sensitive.

I do watch the Simpsons, and I had not rememberd that, and thats my favorite episode. You are right about that, none of the English bitched.

The difference is the 'English' are not a minority people who are discriminated against (well, maybe in Quebec). The Puerto Rican community feels they have something more serious to respond to and the high profile act of intimidating NBC gives them a PR victory. :-) Does anyone know what NBC was threatened with? I suppose they were going to park '76 Monte Carlos on their lawns in Long Island or something.

And even though NBC may not show the episode this year in the US, obviously Sony and Columbia TriStar will sell it to others. We have already heard that it was just shown in Isreal. But I suppose flag burning in that part of the world is a nightly occurance and not much noticed any more.

Shiela. Where's MY flag? (A Canadian joke)

How come no one is in an uproar about the recurring characters of the two gay stereotypes who appeared in The Puerto Rican Day and the Soup Nazi? One of them is both a Puerto Rican parody and an offensively effeminate gay parody. Jerry said numerous times the show is meant to be funny and that sometimes he crosses the line of political correctness because the jokes come first. He is not a sentimental guy. He mocks white anglo saxons and his own Jewish race as much as he mocks others. Someone should do an analysis and breakdown of his stereotypes and jokes to prove this, since it seems so important.

The flag burned by accident (Kramer threw a lit sparkler in the back seat of the car, then stomped out the flames to try to save the flag). Some of the Puerto Ricans who saw him thought he was burning the flag - that's part of the joke. He meant no harm yet once again he had people running after him. He was the one of the four main characters who was enjoying the parade and saying nice things about the people.

How? In the episode, some people wrongly thought that Jerry was gay, and he was just trying to tell them that he wasn't. In that episode, he and George state NUMEROUS TIMES that there is nothing wrong with being gay - they simply didn't want people believing that they were gay when they really weren't. There's nothing wrong with not wanting people to believe something about you that isn't true.

As a Liberal, I find your sig, coupled with your idiodic right-wing attempt to censor something you don't like, to be a slap in the face of real liberals and propose that you be banned from this newsgroup.

A great comedy show would not be great if it had to constantly worry about whom or what interest group it might offend. One of the main tenants of comedy is irony. The irony of the Puerto Rican Day show was how a huge mess developed from a simple beginning--4 people trying to get home. From there, they wind up going through a wild sequence of events before they reach their destination. It could have been a Columbus Day parade, or Veteran's Day parade. But the NY Puerto Rican Day parade was coming up--so it was the token parade. There was no deep-seated, political agenda in this hilarious episode. Just the last great Seinfeld show--that may never be shown again. Now that's a shame. alt showbiz gossip

I had many comments about the original post...but your reference to the Simpsons episode said volumes! Some groups look for situations in which to become victims in order to justify the symptoms. For an alternate perspective on the "minority-victim" check out AM talk radio in the afternoon (3-6 in Virginia) and Ken Hamlin (sp?) "The Black Avenger."

As a modern conservative I take exception to your adjectivial characterization of the "attempt to censor something you don't like" as "right-wing." It is today's neo-liberal (which are the majority) which are desirous of censoring what they dislike through the movement of "political correctness."

CLARIFICATION: I meant to write "It is today's neo-liberal (which are the majority of liberals today)"

Old subject, but... As an American, if I saw our flag being burned in some Puerto Rican (or any other, for that matter) sitcom, I would be fairly upset. I'm not a vet, I have no close relatives that died for our country, I'm not even terribly patriotic, but it's just a little too close to the heart for comedy.

I thought the episode (including the infamous scene) was funny. It may have been insensitive, it was apologized for, and that should be the end of it.

But he doesn't hate the retarded. After all he's befriended Kramer and even though Kramer is retarded Jerry is not embarrased to be around him.

I don't know if Kramer is really retarded. Mentally ill maybe.

I agree with you here. Most white Americans who criticise the Puerto Ricans for protesting this episode would go alsolutely nuts with indignation if their flag had been burned. However, I still say that we ALL should learn to take a joke. Jerry is Jewish and he makes fun of Jews just as much as any other group. He is also makes fun of people who stay single and childless into middle age. He makes fun of New Yorkers, and he is one of them as well. In fact, he makes fun of EVERYTHING----that's why he's funny!!!!! His absolute irreverence. Also, it has been a running joke in the series that Kramer is always getting himself into trouble because of his habit of carelessly disposing of cigars. Once he burned down a log cabin in a similar manner but I didn't hear of any homeowners' associtions accusing the show of promoting arson.

burned a fucking American Flag and stepped on it and shit. I bet there would have been a huge outcry.

I bet there *wouldn't*... because anyone who watches Seinfeld knows that not only is it a comedy, but also that Kramer is a clumsy doofus. It wasn't a flag-burning, it was an accident! Get over it...

I agree. It was totally an accident. I think you all should lighten up already.

get a sense of humor pal, I watched that show with two puerto ricans that laughed their ass off.

Make that three responses I could make: 3) What an unintelligent troll

Most trolls, though unintelligent, come up with more creative responses than that so maybe he is legit--just stupid.

More PR Day reaction:

Right. Now that's a fine example of proper sensitivity. I mean for Kramer
to ceremonially burn the Puerto Rican flag after it had apparently touched the
ground -he didn't have to honor the Puerto Rican flag like that as he is not
Puerto Rican, but he did it anyway! It was like a big hug for the Puerto
Rican people- and I think we all learned.

Puerto

frog's life and death struggle to cross a treacherous work of man like a heavily travelled roadway. There is nothing funny about frogs being brutally squished by 3,000 pound automobiles hurtling over them at high speed. Let's put the pressure on and make sure this episode never again sees a public broadcast. And don't get me started on the portrayal of Irishmen as Neo-Nazis

LOL I think you are correct... I can barely tell what point that guy is even trying to make in that e-mail! And God forbid he could spell even remotely close to actual words in a dictionary!
