JERRY AND ELAINE

I've got a question that's been bothering me ever since I started watching Seinfeld and here it is...how did Jerry and Elaine meet (you know, when they first started dating, why they fell in love, why they broke up) ? We know how Jerry met George (in high school), and how Jerry met Kramer (when Jerry got his apartment), but I don't know if there has ever been a Seinfeld episode that tells how Jerry met Elaine.

In addition to the question about how Jerry and Elaine met, I would like to know if their relationship as boyfriend/girlfriend occurred in the early episodes of the show or if their relationship was something that occurred before. I've only been watching the past few years, but I have seen almost every episode through reruns and I've never seen Jerry and Elaine as a couple except for the episode when they set the rules to be friends who have sex.

Elaine first appears as a character in the show in the second episode of the series (the first to be aired after the pilot, which had been made a year before and had only Jerry, George and a yet-to-be-clearly-named Kramer). It's made clear from the outset that they were already broken up as lovers but decided to remain good friends, and actually made it work.

You don't get too many specifics, but it's implied that the transition from lovers to close friends took place sometime not too long before the series action starts. Their relationship took place perhaps in 1987-88 in real-time terms, and by the time we meet Elaine early in 1990 she and Jerry have been just friends for a while. She's clearly not his lover at the time of the pilot, since he's hoping to score with his houseguest of the weekend before he finds out she's engaged. (The Seinfeld universe begins in the summer of 1989 with the airing of the pilot. While the chronology's kind of loose and not always totally consistent, this season's "The Betrayal," if you count back, indicates that Jerry probably moved into his current building in 1985, met Kramer at that time, and Elaine probably came into his life a couple years later. George, of course, was a part of his life since school days...)

As to why they broke up?  I recall Jerry mentioning to his mother once that
there was a "attraction problem".  His mom said "But Elaine's a lovely
girl" and Jerry replied something like, "it wasn't Elaine."
   Also, in the episode where Jerry's girlfriend always sits around the
house nude, when Jerry tries the same thing and is shot down, he asks
Elaine if anything is wrong with his body.  She IMMEDIATELY replies,
"chicken shoulder blades.  For a start."
   It was something like that.

Jerry called Kramer by name once on the pilot and it sounds like Kessler. On The Betrayal, when it flashes back to Jerry moving in, he calls Kramer Kessler and Kramer corrects him. "Your Kessler right?" "No, it's Kramer." I didn't understand the joke until I saw the pilot for the first time a few weeks ago.
