Seems like (the character of) Jerry Seinfeld was well to do. He never was concerned with money. Even when George wrecked his uninsured rent a car, Kramer leaves his door opened and his flat is burglarized, Jerry never seems that upset. Only the time when Jerry and George buy stock does Jerry seem even a little money conscious.
What would Elaine be making approx at each of her jobs? Working for a publisher, as an executive's assistant and as an "associate" for J Peterman.
What about George? Selling real estate, as assistant to the traveling secretary for the Yankees or at his last job? George must've had some money. He was out of work and got the job with the Yankees and immediately moved into a new flat. That would COST in NYC.
BTW how did George get unemployment if he quit his job?
Clearly Elaine, Jerry and George are Yuppies, while Kramer lives on, well we outside of making Bagels and some lawsuits and book selling.... We don't really know.
New York Real Estate is ridiculous. For that money George would have had an apartment a third of the size that he did. Hollywood/TV has a long tradition of setting characters into apartments that there is no way they could afford.
I don't know when the housing market in Manhattan got so out of hand. When I was thinking of transfering I found pretty decent affordable housing in Queens and Brooklyn, right by the EL that took me to Times Sq in 15 minutes
I know in one episode early on George telle Elaine it's tough to find something decent in her price rangel
Of course in the late 80s we had "Kate & Allie" living in a 4 bedroom 2 story, Greenwich Village apt for $800 a month
And Bill Cosby telling Theo a decent apartment in Manhattan would cost him $400/month and that was mid to late 80s
Yesterday on Barney Miller I saw Barney complain of new condos being built in his district at $250,000 displacing all the poor people now homeless and in his squad room
And lastly in the early 70s Oscar and Felix paying $200 a month for their two bedroom flat

I'll say this about Manhattan - those high rents have certainly made it safer to live there. However, I wouldn't set foot in Queens ever again... I think all the rats moved there :)
one thing you may have overlooked is that George got paid out 3 months severence. He then went on the Summer of George binge, buying a chair with a fridge and threatening to learn frolf and read a book from start to finish.

Did he ever leave K-uger? I have the faint recollection of him saying he couldn't take it anymore over there. I think it was when K-uger was down to two people, and George ended up having to do all the work while K-uger was eating pie at Monk's.
He was still there in _The Maid_. There's no mention of a new job or recent unemployment in _The Puerto Rican Day_, so we can assume he stayed at Krueger up until _The Finale_.
Plus, it SEEMED like that single check he received (highest paying job for a comedy show) completely paid for the Cadillac he purchased for his parents. dave
