A quick question: Is J. Peterman based on a real person/catalogue??

Yes, there is a real J. Peterman, both man and catalog. In fact, I just read that they currently sell an item named after Elaine in their new catalog.

We all know that J. Peterman is real, but what I want to know is if anyone knows Peterman's (the real one) opinion of the show, and the potrayl of himself? Anyone have any idea?

That's a good question, i would be very interested in finding this out myself. I heard that George Steinbrenner loved his 'character' on the show, and a while back I heard he was going to make a cameo, but I never saw him. Guess he was too busy firing people!

He was also the Postmaster General who interrogated Kramer in "The Junk Mail."

Wilford Brimley was also one of the "cool" senior's in Cocoon, and was great in "In & Out" (the Dad).

Other fabulous roles: the Judge in "Absence of Malice", the bad guy in "The Firm" and the plant foreman in "China Syndrome"

Actually, Steinbrenner DID film a scene for the show, but they never used it. I'm not sure, but I think they filmed him in a scene involving George and Susan's wedding, but they had to scrap it when they decided to kill Susan off. Anyone have more info on this??

Actually there was an interview with the guy who plays Peterman (John O'Hurley?) in the Indianapolis Star's TV book. He said that after he had appeared as Peterman, they asked the real Peterman for permission to use his character. The real Peterman thinks it's funny, but says O'Hurley makes him look "like an ass." O'Hurley and Peterman have become friends. Peterman sends O'Hurley clothes; O'Hurley sends Peterman wine.

George ended up on the cutting room floor, if I remember correctly, kind of what some fans may have wanted to do to him after the Hideki Irabu near fiasco last season.

There is a special TV Guide retrospective magazine out right now that has "inside information" about the show. In it they say that NBC runs every script containing a J. Peterman segment by the real J. Peterman for approval.

The real J. Peterman also hires the actor that plays him for store grand-openings as well, so I think we can assume he's a fan.

Not only is it real, it is based in Lexington, KY (I live in KY and I have seen the real offices). The real J.Peterman donated actual stuff from his office for the office of the J.Peterman on Seinfeld.
