It seems as if all the popular network televisions shows...well, at least some of them, have "spin off" shows. You know, the shows where a character or characters on the show are given their very own program. I would give some examples, but I think you already know what I'm talking about.
The hit HBO series, Six Feet Under, lovingly known as 6FU to it's fans, has the potential for many possible spin offs. For instance, why not capitalize on the popularity of reality television and have a "mock" reality show loosely patterned after The Osbournes?
I was thinking that HBO could produce a spin off called The Chenowiths, staring Margaret & Bernard Chenowith, the two quirky yet loveable psychiatrists and their two wacky kids, Billy & Brenda. Who wouldn't love to watch the zany interactions between these endearing oddballs? Just imagine all of the possibilities.....the first episode could maybe have Margaret & Bernard hosting a hot tub party for their glitzy Hollywood friends. Fireworks would ensue when Billy is caught rummaging through the guests' coats & hand bags, looking for prescription drugs that he can steal. Brenda would undoubtedly come to Billy's defense, at least until she is distracted by the sight of people in the hot tub. This would lead her to the inevitable anonymous sexual encounter and maybe they could have Margaret walk into the guest bedroom and catch Brenda going at it with a married couple from Van Nuys.
Another potential spin off I was thinking of would be a vehicle for Keith & David. It could be called Big Black Gay Sex Cop and it would focus on Keith's life at work, full of gritty drama and violence as he and the other policemen deprive innocent civilians of their civil rights. Each episode would be sure to have a scene in the precinct locker roomm shower where we would see naked muscular cops (and a few pudgy, fat ones) showering together and lamenting the difficulties of their jobs. The other part of the show would focus on the relationship between Keith & David and be sort of a Sex In the City type thing, only with gay men being the slutty whores instead of Horseface Jessica Parker, old skanky Kim Cattrall & that absolutely hideous looking red head. [the brunette is a hottie so I won't slag on her at all] This gay relationship angle has sort of already been done on Queer as Folk, but HBO would do a much better job, I'm sure.
The last one I was thinking about would be sort of a Dawson's Creek rip-off, except all the kids would be sort of ugly and depressed and angst-ridden. Of course Claire & Gabe from 6fU would be the two main stars and they could have some of their friends from 6FU on the show but there would have to be more ugly, depressed, angst-ridden kids on the show because Claire & Gabe aren't interesting enough to carry the show by themselves. I still haven't thought of a name for this show yet.
I am thinking about putting together a proposal to pitch to HBO for these three shows. I think they could all be a big hit.
