Fans discuss George's line about Berkowitz when he mishearsthe van owner yelling "Seinfeld's van" as "Son of Sam", with posters explaining that David Berkowitz was the original Son of Sam killer.
A thing I didn't understand in this episode is when George and his Cousin is in the van. George is waiting for his parents to show up. Then the guy who used to own the van comes up to the window screaming "Seinfelds van!", and George thinks that he says "Son of Sam!". Then George escapes the van screaming "I know it wasn't Berkowitz!". Now, what does George mean by "I know it wasn't Berkowitz!"?

I'm just guessing, but I think the original "Son of Sam" was actually a guy named Berkowitz, who got sentenced to jail. Now George is suggesting that the actual murderer is still on the loose.

In the episode "The Diplomats Club" Newman had to bring in Berkowitz's mailbag for collateral to get Kramer off the hook when he was betting the Texan on arrivals at the airport.

Reminds me of a Dennis Miller bit. It seems Charlie Manson got ahold of a copy of the Beatles' boxed set on CD. Manson said, you know the clarity on these CDs is amazing, it turns out they weren't really talking to me at all, it was just pops and scratches, I feel like such an asshole!

Berkowitz was convicted of being the Son of Sam in the late 70's. George must have suspected that Berkowitz was not the son of sam and thought that his fears were being confirmed by the guy.
