Question

Posters debate revolving door etiquette, discussing whether it's acceptable to share a compartment with strangers, acquaintances, or friends.

Hi folks,

I was talking to a couple of people on my daughter's hockey team this past weekend, and we were discussing the revolving-door etiquette.

The question was: can you share a compartment with a stranger? Or are you supposed to wait for a new, fresh, and empty compartment before proceding through the door? Is it OK to share a compartment with an acquaintance? Family members? Friends?

Are you supposed to offer your free compartment to women? (They'd have to be quick!).

What is the rule here?

They should have made an episode on that...

PS. And yes, the games *were* exciting, this discussion happened inbetween games....

You've been a lot of help...

Eh, what-you-may-call it.... a section, partition... a quarter (or fifth/sixth for larger doors) of the revolving doors... the space in between the rotating doors.... the area you occupy when you are *in* the revolving door...

What *is* the name of that space?

Sharing a compartment with a stranger is out of the question. You are risking a slap in the face or a punch in the mouth. Very awkward situation I think for both parties. As far as sharing a compartment with an aquaintance, that depends on a few factors. First of all, how well you know the person and what your relationship is with them. For example, family member, long time girlfriend, wife are all okay to share assuming the compartment is large enough for both parties to be comfortable and no stepping on each others toes is takign place. Now, sharing a compartment with a buddy is different. You are risking being labeled as gay. Not that there is anything wrong with that but I would prefer to wait the few extra seconds for a new, fresh compartment. I think a revolving door is the same as a regular door when it comes to women first or whatever. Not that you can really open a revolving door for a woman. I guess you could spin it around for her but that would look pretty foolish. Same goes for an automatic door. looks pretty stupid when you step on the mat so the door opens just to let the woman go first. i dont' know how good of an episode this would be. when i was dating this girl back in 1996, we both loved Seinfeld, and I always had this thing about new, crisp dollar bills and we used to always joke about how that would make a great seinfield episode. well, george and the vending machine in "the dealership" was as close as we ever got to seeing our idea come to life.

[George enters Jerry's apartment and slams the door with an annoyed look on his face.] Jerry: "What's eating you, Sherlock?" George (agitated): "That's it, I tell ya...no more!!" Jerry: "What gives?" George: "Okay, today I'm down at the Grace Building on 42nd Street, you know for that job interview that Elaine's friend set me up with..." Jerry: "Why, yes the 'top architect at the firm' position." George (pausing momentarily while glaring at Jerry): "Ha, ha..." (resuming his excitable disposition): "After the interview, as I'm going to walk out of the building, I'm waiting my turn for the revolving door...Some 'Mister I'm a successful computer analyst' cuts me off before I can get in." Jerry: "Ah, yes the ol' 'De-volving door'." George: "Yes, I've been 'devolved'. And, frankly, I don't like it!" Jerry: "I wonder, is there a 'revolving door etiquette'?" George: "Why yes there is..." (very annoyed):"WAIT FOR THE PERSON IN FRONT OF YOU!" Kramer (Backing out of the refrigerator while eating a piece of fruit): "Of course there is; women and children first. And the rest..." (in a screeching, frightened voice): "it's every man for himself!" Jerry: "Oh, no it isn't...everyone just waits their turn...friend or foe...man or beast..." Kramer "Well, you should go down there." George: "What do you mean?" Kramer: "Well, I imagine that this alleged business man was leaving around 5pm, correct?" George: "As a matter of fact, it was near 5." Kramer: "George, these guys are like clockwork; go in at 9, leave at 5...Go down there and cut HIM off. You've got to get in their head, dig?" George: "That's brilliant, Kramer...that's what I'll do...I'll go down there tomorrow before 5...I'll wait for HIM. I'll show HIM who's...well, WHO'S SOMETHING!" Jerry: "Are you crazy? We have that meeting with the NBC people tomorrow night at 7 to discuss the show. What if you get held up?" George: "So what...NBC is on 49th street, the Grace Buiding is on 42nd...they're practically next to each other." Jerry: "If you're late for that meeting, I'll strangle you." George: "I'll be there...Oh-hoh, don't worry about it...I'll be there!" Kramer: "Giddyup!"

[Cut to next day, lobby of the Grace Buiding.] George, trying to appear inconspicuous, hides his face while reading a newspaper next to the revolving door. He keeps nervously looking at his watch, which now reads, "5:05". George (mumbling to himself): "Come on...where are you...you're supposed to be here already." George spots the businessman walking across the lobby towards the revolving door. George (whispering in hoarse anger): "A-hah! You want to see who's first...George is gonna show you who's first..." As the businessman walks towards the door, George cuts him off, positioning his body right between the businessman and the entrance to the door. The businessman then politely gestures to George, extending his hand, while saying, "After you." George, flustered, tries to backstep. At the same time, someone on the other side starts to push the revolving door. Because of the close proximity of George's body to the door, George has no choice but to enter. In his scuffle, George drops the newspaper, which then gets wedged underneath the door. As the person on the other side proceeds to push the revolving door, the newspaper gets tightly wedged under the door, bringing the door to a screeching halt. Everyone in the lobby looks towards George. George unsuccessfully attempts to push the door forward, as the door is now strongly bound by the position of the newspaper, trapping George inside. George (frantically moving his hands around the glass on the door): "I can't believe this...I'm stuck...I can't breathe...Oh, my God! HELP! HELP!" George: (shouting): "I 'V E B E E N D E V O L V E D !!!!"

***That's not actually from a Seinfeld...but maybe it could of been. :P

Really? I thought it was spot on late series Seinfeld. If that segment had aired in anytime season 8-9 it wouldn't have been out of place.

Well done zvoidx.

I thought so too. The Jerry's apartment dialogue rang true anyway....maybe the rest was a bit of a stretch, but do-able.

When I saw Er's post the other day, it gave me a flash of inspiration and I wrote it on the spot and posted it.

Thanks for the compliments Joe and Pollux.
