what's the big deal?

i know it's common for the audience to applaud when a character makes his or her first entrance in each episode, but what the heck does everyone freak out for when elaine walks in the door at jerry's apartment and she starts jumping up and down and jerry, george and kramer are there and they are super happy to see her. i don't understand what the big deal is. was she gone for a long time or something? she was in the last episode.

i don't remember which episode this is but i am sure most of you know what i am talking about.

I believe that she had just returned from a trip to Europe with her psychiatrist. The others had not seen her in some time and were expressing their joy at her return.
