In this ep. what's the deal with teh Newman scene?? (the one where kramer drops his shoe in him while emptying sand)
That was the only Newman scene in the ep that I saw and I didn't think it made a whole lot of sense. Was something cut in syndication?
I only bring this up because "Seinfeld" throughout it's history never usually showed scenes wihtout a purpose.

I would have thought "Seinfeld" had lots of shows that were about purpose.
I like that scene with Newman getting hit on the head with Kramer's shoe. It does fit when you think about it. The woman gets hit on the head with an organizer, then hit on the head with the tape recorder. Meanwhile Kramer is getting sand out of his shoe and drops the shoe, and of all the people it could have landed on, it was Newman. Works for me.

It would have been funny enough even if it had just been some stranger on the street who'd have been hit by Kramer's shoe, but that it was *Newman* made it even better! Not having seen him in the ep, I sure didn't expect him to suddenly pop in like that! Almost felt sorry him... ;)

George: "The sea was angry that day, my friends - like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli. I got about 50 feet out and suddenly the great BEAST appeared before me. I tell ya, he was ten stories high if he was a foot! As if sensing my presence he let out a great bellow! I said "Easy... big fellow!" And then, as I watched him struggling, I realized that something was obstructing its breathing. From where I was standing I could see directly into the eye of the great fish."
Jerry: "Mammal."
George "Whatever."
Kramer: "OK, then what did you do next?"
George: "Well then, from out of nowhere, a huge tidal wave lifted me, tossed me like a cork and I found myself right on top of him face-to-face with the blow hole! I...I could barely see from the waves crashing down upon me but I knew something was there. And so I reached my hand in, felt around, and pulled out the obstruction." (George pulls out and reveals a golf ball.) (20 seconds of laughter)
Kramer: "What is that, a Titalist?"
George nods.
Kramer: "A hole in one, huh?

I disagree, most episodes feature at least one conversation that has nothing to do with the plot.

He did not say "plot". He said "purpose." So I can agree with both statements. There is very little that does not develop a theme, or play as counterpoint to the PLOT development. However there are usually conversations between Jerry and George concerning some trivial matter of life or relationships which have a PURPOSE in character development etc. See how they fill in as the "mortar" to the plot's "bricks".
(It's late. I know what I mean but that may not make too much sense.)
