Testimonial to a VCR

I just replaced my 7 year old JVC with a new model and chose the Panasonic PV-8554-K. Is has a feature called Commercial Advance. It is supposed to fast forward through commercials when playing tapes you record on it. My God, It Works! I thought it would be some fancy feature that was too difficult to use or too wonky to count on. Nope! It's wonderful! I wish I had this a few years ago - Now I have 180 Seinfeld episodes to retape!

For those that are interested. It tapes an entire show you program it for, then it rewinds to the beginning of that session only, takes about 4-5 minutes and marks commercials and then stops at the end of that recording, ready for the next recording.

When playing back the tape it senses the commercial break - goes into fast forward until the end of the commercial and begins play again when the program comes back. Marvelous!

My wife says she knows she is in trouble when my VCR is smarter than she is. :-)

I am sure there are a lot of people out there that knew this technology existed. I can tell you it is worth it. But I would not want to marry one. :-)

My question: a VCR can only be so smart. I mean, this is a MACHINE for goodness sake. How do you think it will respond when:

- commercials that you actually wanted to see are deleted - the VCR cannot differentiate between part of a "Seinfeld" show that looks like a commercial and a Jerry Seinfeld AmEX commercial that *doesn't* look like a commercial.

I got a vcr like that too. I love it and no it doesn't delete the commercials it just jumps over them.

They are not actually deleted. They are marked and the machine Fast Forwards through them. You can turn the feature off and watch the commercials if you want to.

It would skip over the AmEx. I do not know what it would do over the Stand Up routine - that MAY look like a commercial to the machine.

Does anyone know how this works? Is there analytical logic in the machine or are the commercial breaks indicated through some signal from the stations?

What's the approx. cost on one of these wonders? I'd be interesested in putting it on my Christmas list next year when they'll probably be more popular (and well known) and cheaper.
