The Soup Nazi

In this episode, when Elaine orders her soup,

ELAINE: Hi there. Um, uh -- [drumming on countertop] Oh! Oh! Oh! One mulligatawny and, um....

what is that right there? Is that lima bean?

SOUP NAZI: Yes.

ELAINE: Never been a big fan. [coughing]

I don't get the joke here, if there's any...

Is it only because she asked for the kind of soup and knew she wouldn't order it, therefore wasting the Soup Nazi's time? Or is there a pun on lima, which I don't get...

I laughed anyway, referring to my explanation, but I feel there's more (no, there's less)

Well, the joke is that ordering at the soup stand has been built up to be such a precision operation with dire consequences for the slow or error- prone customer. Elaine comes in and *doesn't* quickly order soup and step to the side with cash in hand. Hell, she doesn't even know what she wants yet! Then she pounds on the aluminum counter, she insults his lima bean soup, tells him he looks like Al Pacino and does the "Hoohaa"... Yeah, no soup for her!

I don't believe there's anything more to the lima bean line other than to give her a chance to disparage it, which further infuriates the Soup Nazi.

It's just that she's wasting his time and breaking with protocol. He gets more and more steamed with every word.
