Sour Grapes

Please post if you've seen the new movie by Larry David (the man we have to thank for the brilliant, neurotic tone for the Seinfeld series).

The movie 'Sour Grapes', Larry David's writing/directing debut, opened last weekend and it's generally been getting stomped on by critics. Appreciation of comedy is extremely very subjective and this in no way proves the movie is bad but, it might detract from the argument made by Justin Tribble that David was mainly responsible for all that was good in the old Seinfelds.

The boring old argument is that Seinfeld went down the toilet after Larry David left before last season. I don't think the show deteriorated nearly as badly as JT and his ilk believe.

It further proves that no single person is responsible for a great tv show or movie. Both are a collaborative medium--and when they hit big we must thank all the people involved--not just one person. Converesly, we must not blame Larry David for a not well-received debut as a director. Woody Allen needed several movies to get it right. alt showbiz gossip

I just came back from seeing Larry David's movie "Sour Grapes," and liked it a lot. I'm frankly shocked that there has been so little mention of it on this ng. Everyone knows David's importance to "Seinfeld," and I'm surprised that there's been so little support for the film, both in terms of comments here and performance at the box office. The movie wasn't perfect by any means, but there was a lot of the dry, dark humor that has always been a trademark of "Seinfeld's" best episodes. There are many moments in the film that reminded me a lot of the comedic sensibility seen on the show -- "hotel sex," "that's crazy talk!", and just about every scene with the movie's older characters. "Sour Grapes" isn't exactly breaking box office records so I'd suggest anyone who really considers themselves a Sein-fan go check it out while they can, and show a little support for Larry David.

The movie got mostly fair to bad reviews, it didn't have a name cast, and it wasn't advertised very extensively. Those three factors alone would outweigh the average person's desire to see a certain movie ,even with Larry David at the helm. Besides, Seinfeld fans can watch Seinfeld nightly for free, and figure Sour Grapes will be on video in a few months. It isn't easy to make a hit movie, and this could be a big reason Jerry has been shying away from making movies.
