Video format

I'm trying to get some tapes copied ,can anyone let me Know the difference between ntsc and pal , is it a US / Europe thing. ? and are they compatable. Thanks .

Yes. US is NTSC standard. Europe is PAL They are Not directly compatible , but there is crossover equipment available that will convert one to the other. Also the far east AFAIK is on a totally different system called SECAM

NTSC is also used in Canada, South Africa and Japan. SECAM is used in Eastern Europe and France. All other major countries have PAL (incl. Australia). PAL and SECAM are closer to each other than any of them to NTSC, since PAL/SECAM have 25 fps, NTSC has 30 fps.
